Beth Medcalf, the Director of the Medicine Hat Branch of Parkinson Alberta, spoke to the club today about the chronic progressive neuro-degenerative disorder known as Parkinson's Disease. There are over 10,000 people in Alberta with the disease, which is most commonly diagnosed in adults at age 50, but has a wide age spread including 10% of patients at less than age 40. The disease occurs when certain nerve cells in the brain stop producing dopamine. This chemical controls movement and motor function. The cause is unknown at this time, as well as an reliable predictive model. However treatment options are helping people with the disease live a full life.
Parkinson Alberta is committed to ensuring no Albertan has to face this disease alone. They operate over 40 support groups across the province, as well as a helpline. As well, they provide supportive counseling for patients, spouses, caregivers and family members. They also provide educational opportunities and support provincial research.
A professional presentation by Beth (with our thanks) and if you know someone affected by the disease please make them aware of the support available through this valuable organization.
