President's Message
President's Remarks:

President Karen opened the meeting, which turned out to include a great deal of Rotary business, at 12:15 pm.

Karen reminded everyone that January was "Rotary awareness month" and on the tables were business card sized Rotary cards, useful for reminders about our meeting and our contact information.

President-elect Chris Perret was in attendance and "practicing" with our new sound system.  There were hiccups of course, but hopefully it will work well into the future.

Rotary Fun Fact:

In keeping with Karen's weekly tradition in our Centennial year, she provided a fun Rotary fact.  She named off a number of prestigious and notable individuals who were member of Rotary.  Charles Mayo (the Mayo Clinic), Sam Walton (Walmart) and J.C. Penny, as well as Neil Armstrong, Sir Edmund Hillary, Sir Winston Churchill and Walt Disney made her list.  The whole list is available at http://www.charlotterotary.org/400famousrotarians.html

Membership Update:

The following four individuals are proposed for club membership, this is the first (or two) week that their names will appear in the Newsletter.  If anyone has concerns or questions please direct them to Bruce Shepard, Director of Membership or Karen Blewett, sponsor.
  • Natasha Carvello, Executive Director of the Medicine Hat Women's Shelter, a former member of our club.
  • Chris Christie, Executive Director of the Community Foundation of SE Alberta, proposed by Karen Blewett.
  • Theresa Hardiker, Acting Executive Director of the Economic Development Agency of SE Alberta, proposed by Karen Blewett.

Rotary Information:
  • A recent email invitation from District, announcing a Global Grant training workshop in Calgary, a Rotary Challenger Park, on Saturday March 24th.  The course is strongly recommended for any club who is planning on doing a significant international project.  The Global grant program is the fastest area of growth in the Grants program.
  • PDG Sandy Mackay made a short presentation about an upcoming "Journey of Reconciliation" workshop at the Medicine Hat College, Feb 14 -17.  The workshop is free to all, being sponsored by the Miywasin Centre, MH College and Rotary.  This will hopefully develop a shared understanding of past issues, and provide opportunities for working together in the future.
  • Every three years, the Rotary Council on Legislation meets to review the operation of Rotary and review requests from Rotary Clubs around the world for changes to the standard constitution, rules and proceedures that govern Rotary operations.  This years approved items can be found at  http://rotary.msgfocus.com/files/amf_highroad_solution/project_705/2017_Council_on_Resolutions_Report_of_Action_EN.pdf
