    • First Aid for animals
    • Book Buddies with Animals Program
  • Volunteer Program with 60 active volunteers (who volunteer weekly/bi-weekly)
  • Currently the SPCA is home to 100 cats and 15 dogs
  • Cat intake has increased 36% in the last year whereas dogs have decreased slightly by 9%.
    • There is a "kitten" season between May and September where the SPCA sees an influx of cats. This is why the Spay and Neuter Program is an important part of the SPCA's core service.

Katie also provided a number of copies of the SPCA's recent Annual Report for Rotarians interested

Notice of Motion:
As a result of an item discussed and supported by the Board of Directors, Karen Blewett, President-Elect, provided the Club with the following Notice of Motion:
"That the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat accepts an alteration to the Club's existing / approved 2016-2017 Budget, to introduce a new item known as a Rotary Impact Assessment.  The expenditure for this item is up to $10,000 and will use existing funds previously allocated but not spent in the Rotary Club's current 2016-2017 Budget."

Brief overview: The Rotary Impact Assessment will be used as part of our Centennial celebration to demonstrate the value of our Rotary Club on individuals, the community and the world. It will also serve as a valuable tool for us to better promote Rotary in Medicine Hat, recruit new members and fundraise with purpose. The format of this Rotary Impact Assessment would be similar to the impact study our Club learned about with the Alberta Youth Entrepreneurship Camp (on November 28, 2016).

Karen also requested to change the waiting period for the motion from the traditional two-week waiting period to one week due to availability in the program on January 30th to present the motion to the membership. A waiting period is required for any financial motion and this variance request should be voted on by the Club.

The following is the motion to change the waiting period:
"That the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat amend the traditional waiting period for discussion and possible approval of this item from our standard two weeks, to one week, due to available meeting and the need to proceed with this project as quickly as possible so it can be put to use."
Motion was moved by Karen B, Seconded by Terry Brekko, and carried.

Happy Dollars & Fines:  Today's Sgt-at-Arms was Adolf Seiler

Fines:
  • Johnathan was fined for working for Toronto Dominion Bank.  Adolf 'would have' fined Mark but he wasn't here today!
  • Teresa and Melanie...well...birthday's are expensive in this town!
  • Herman Wahl  for 55 years in our Rotary Club
  • Uwe for winning at Bingo
  • Jenny for winning free tea
  • Gerry Nadeau for coming to the meeting today
  • Jack and Carol Snedden for bringing Shann into the Club
  • Greg Martin would have been fined but he left early.  Adolf will go to funeral home to get his money.
Happy Dollars:
  • Herman is happy he will be making up a meeting at the Rotary Club of Barbados
  • Carol Snedden was happy about four of her grandchildren recently graduating (3 granddaughters and 1 grandson).  They all had various specialized degrees, Master's and PhDs.
  • Wayne made a bet about Trump with his wife.  The winner gets to drive Wayne's car for month.  His wife is certain she will win and if she does, Wayne doesn't get her car.  Instead, he has to rent a Volkswagen!

  • Jenny had four happy dollars - two for our new members and two for our guests
  • Adolf gave a happy dollar for Dominique doing a wonderful job with UPS
  • Dave Panabaker gave a dollar for being late and happy dollars for Terry Brekko's suggestion to see Brett Butt.  He was initially on the fence but ended up thoroughly enjoying it and laughing for hours. He also saw a  Led Zepplin cover band at Esplanade.  That was great too
  • Stan is happy Pat McNally has a new pacemaker.  He is also happy that his daughter has a concert in San Francisco and his son wrote a book that will likely turn into a four part mini-series.
  • Gail is happy for his free lunch and for winning curling.
  • Ray is happy for new members.  He's a bit sad our Club didn't last long for 100% Paul Harris.  Carol broke her ankle.
