President's Message
President's Remarks

President Uwe welcomed everyone to this spring meeting.  The attendance was great, helped in no small part by the return of our southern friends (the snowbirds).  Uwe mentioned that it was going to be a busy meeting and we had lots to do.  We had to set an extra table to accommodate all our members and guests today.

Rotary Information:
  • President Uwe read two thank you letters from participants in this years Rotary Music Festival.
  • The Rotary Celebration 2017, to kick off our Centennial year and fundraiser for our trail improvement project NEEDS everyone to sell tickets.  Please make sure you've sold some tickets, bought some yourself and promoted the event whenever possible.

Rotary Presentations:
  • President Uwe announced that at the last meeting of the Board, a recommendation to offer an "honorary" membership in the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat to Garth Vallely was approved.  Garth was forced to resign from the club due to ill health last year but because of his service in the community and within Rotary, specifically his mentorship of the Medicine Hat High School Interact club the Board was happy to support this recommendation.  Uwe presented the certificate this week.

As well, PDG Sandy Mackay and President Uwe Krickhahn presented a number of Paul Harris Fellowships, to deserving Rotarians.  First, Doug Fleming and Dale Stein have achieved incremental levels of PHF and got new distinguishing pins.  As well Terry Cooper, Anne Carrier and Lavar Payne received their initial Paul Harris pins.  Congratulations to all of you.

Project 175 Presentation by Major Scott Payne
Our guest speaker today was Major Scott Payne, with the South Alberta Light Horse, to describe a local commemorate anniversary project.  The project is to commemorate the City's contributions to WWI, the involvement of citizens, 3rd Canadian Mounted Rifles , 175th (Medicine Hat) Battalion and specifically Pte. J.P. Robertson, VC

The project is fully described on the Institute's website www.project175.com

The project is modeled after Battalion Park at Signal Hill in Calgary, which was constructed in 1915-1916.  It will be constructed parallel to Hwy # 1, along the natural sloping hill south of the Access Condominium's along 3rd St NW.  Work will likely proceed in early August of 2017 and hopefully the dedication ceremony will be completed in September.  It is planned that there will be a ceremony at the monument site on November 6, 2017, to acknowledge the 100th anniversary of Pte JP Robertson's fatal actions of valour at Passchendaele, for which he received the Victoria Cross.

A copy of the presentation by Major Payne is available on the club website.

    Minute People:
    • Teresa Schile advised the club that we will receive a Rotary Friendship Exchange group from Sri Lanka, from Sunday June 18th thru Tuesday June 20th.  She will require billets for 9 men and 1 woman who make up the group.  More information about the program and activities will be available over the next few weeks.
    • Dick Bide is looking for hosts for the dinner club, please contact him to arrange to have your dinner.
    • Doug Fleming reminded Rotarians to please write their name on the blue dinner slip, otherwise attendance credit is unlikely.
    • Jenna Raimbault needs Rotarians to bring a bottle of wine, to help build a wine tree for the Centennial Celebration.  Wine with a value of $100 to 10 dollars, either white or red, is required for the fundraiser.  Because there isn't a meeting next week, please call her or deliver the bottle to her office at Investors Group, 1324 Southview Dr SE.  Thanks to all who brought a bottle today.
    • Chris Perret also "more than encouraged" Rotarians to sell Rotary Centennial Celebration tickets.  We need a concerted push on these tickets over the next  week.  The Centennial Celebration committee meeting on Tuesday April 18th will be the point where we determine we have sold enough tickets to proceed.  Anne Carrier provided a summary of the excellent music available that evening, and Chris reviewed the program and use of the funds in our Centennial Trail project.
