President's Message
President's Remarks

President Karen Blewett  welcomed everyone to the last meeting of August.

Karen closed the meeting with another "Rotary Fun Fact", this time related to the history of the club.  The club charter date was June 1, 1918, and when the official charter ceremony took place on August 19, 1918, the third premier of the Province of Alberta, Charles Stewart traveled to Medicine Hat to speak at the ceremony.

The club was also amused by the story of the Sgt-at-Arms collection bowl, which was given to the club by the RC of Brooks (whom we helped charter).  Apparently the plaque on the side wasn't sticking on tightly, so it was refastened with four screws from a Volkswagen carburetor.  Good job Uwe, it's still on there!!

Adventures in Citizenship presentation
Rotarians were very pleased to welcome Mishaela Lanigan to our meeting today and listen to her excellent presentation about her experience at Adventures in Citizenship.  She and another student from McCoy High School were selected for this years trip.  Mishaela recently graduated from McCoy and will be beginning her study of nursing at the University of Lethbridge next week.

Mishaela was very happy to take part in the trip to Ottawa, she found it a life changing experience and greatly supported her belief's in the strength of diversity and inclusively.  She was extremely grateful for the opportunity and wanted us to know it was an encouraging and remarkable experience.  She now has dozens of new, life long friends and found it very interesting to learn about differences, and how strong that group became.

She left a "thank you" note for the club, which is photographed below.

Mishaela was asked a number of questions about her experience and her career goals by the audience.  Clearly a worthy recipient of Rotary funding and we wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
