Rotary Reminders
  • President Uwe reminded everyone of the special meeting on Monday August 22nd, with the senior executive of the University of Alberta.  Perhaps a good meeting to bring a friend to.
Prospective Members:
The club is actively recruiting new members. The membership committee, lead by Membership Director, Jenny Hetherington, would be happy to assist anyone who is considering proposing a member and would like feedback or help with the process.  One of our Strategic Plan targets is to have 100 active, engaged members for our Centennial celebration in 2018.

Meeting Reminder:
As many in the club know, we recently had a member resign, due to extreme hearing loss.  Because hearing difficulties are experienced by a number of Rotarians and guests, one of our members put together a list of helpful reminders to ensure we do our best to accommodate those with auditory challenges.

- Speak slowly and distinctly.  Slow, concise speech can be learned and become habit-forming.
- Use the "4 P's" - persistent, patient, practice with a positive attitude.  Emphasize each key word in a sentence with a slight pause.
- USE the handheld microphone, both for comments and during club activities.
- Keep table conversation to a minimum, out of respect for those speaking and to avoid background noise that is distracting.

With a little practice, we can help everyone in the club both hear and understand, both as a courtesy and to help engage all members in the club.

Up Coming Events:
  • Information on the Waterton-Glacier Peace Park assembly was available at the front desk and a power point presentation was downloaded on the Club website.  If you are interested, register on the assembly website for the Sept 16 - 18 event.

Dave Panabaker is our new Assistant Governor and Past President. Dave spoke with Shelley Benesch and described how the club intended to honor our past president Ernie with a Paul Harris fellow presentation on Sept 19th. Shelley will attend on that day, which happens to be the day of the DG's visit and wants the presentation to be upbeat and without sorrow.  As few tears as possible would be appreciated.  Shelley also passed along a wish that members learn from a mistake Ernie made, and not put off ensuring their wills are up to date.   Dave also spoke about the Centennial Project fundraising sub-committee, and their wish to have a gala utilizing people from the music festival, the artist community, our youth programs at the high school and college, as part of a fundraiser next spring in late April 2017.
