The Rotary Club of Medicine Hat welcomed Bill Yuill to the club today, and was very happy to listen to a wonderful recounting of his family and his personal story regarding his life in business.
Bill was introduced by Terry Brekko, who although Bill didn't really need one, did a good job of it it anyway!
Bill started by introducing his personal philosophy about his responsibility to add value to assets, to improve what he was given and then capture that increased value.
Bill told wonderful stories about his grandfather and father, their roles in early Medicine Hat and how the railway was important in both opening the west and in their lives. Bill spoke about his father's role in founding Alberta Clay Products, and the original motion picture business's in Medicine Hat. Bill attended UBC and arrived back in this area to work on the ranch and at the radio station. Although he did start out as a disc jockey, he graduated to helping run that initial and many more radio and TV outlets, as well as Monarch Cable Television. He spoke about the transition of that to Shaw Cable System and how that business has changed.
He spoke about he believes are three key points in any business venture.
- Recognizing that opportunity.
- Seizing control of the opportunity.
- Having the initiative to move forward with the opportunity (dealing with the accompanying risks)
He spoke about meeting so many interesting people, Dolly Parton, Jean Belliveau and Yogi Berra just to name a few.
Among other honors, he was recently awarded the Lieutenant Governor's "Alberta Order of Excellence", for which he is very thankful and proud.
Several questions after his presentation, and we appreciate his time and effort to make the speech.
