Update on September 2018 RYPEN camp
The Rotary Club welcomed Kristen Price, one of the Adult Leaders of the RYPEN camp held every fall under the sponsorship of Rotary.

Kristen has been involved in RYPEN for 15 years, as a participant, youth leader and now as an adult volunteer.  RYPEN (which stands for Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) takes place at the South Alberta Bible Camp (SABC) near Lomond on Sept 20 - 23.  RYPEN focuses on students who wouldn't normally get an opportunity for this type of training, those students who are marginal or "on the edge"

It builds character and teamwork through a holistic - whole person approach and uses a lot of team based positive reinforcement.

Kristen spoke specifically about the "letting go" ceremony, and how it helps kids move forward by dealing with a past issue in a positive way.

Please encourage school counselors and teachers, to enroll kids during the back to school period, it can certainly change lives.

Minute People:
  • Dave Stalwick did a minute on the upcoming bingo, Sunday afternoon August 26.  If you haven't done a bingo in a while, please consider helping out.
  • Adolf Seiler announced that he had a few Saamis Rotary Harley tickets ($100/ticket) for their draw on September 28.
  • Karen Blewett reminded the club to attend the RAYEC camp business day, on Saturday August 18 from 11 am to 1 pm.  See invitation below

  • Dave Panabaker took a minute (or two) and explained the progress and current status of the "Rotary Centennial Drive" project, as part of our Centennial Celebration.  Although the name is part of the approved database, waiting for that name to be used in the "R" area of the City may take some years, so the idea of renaming 23rd St NW, from Division Ave N to Box Springs Road NW is being discussed with the City of Medicine Hat.  More information to come in the fall.
  • Don Davis, President of the Rotary Music Festival Society took a minute to update the club on a few summer happenings within the Music Festival Society.
    • Our Executive Director, Delynne Lorentzen has agreed to serve another year.
    • The Committee is considering the advantages of replacing our printed program with a digital one.  It would make things much simpler for most people, still allow advertising but avoid the high cost of paper printing.
    • The Committee is also reviewing the use and need for trophies at the Festival.  Many are not really used or meaningful to participants, and cost the festival to have maintained.
    • Also, there was some mailing confusion last year, which has been identified and hopefully corrected.
