President's Message
President Uwe Krickhahn welcomed everyone to the first meeting of this Rotary year.  We have a busy schedule planned, so we got right to the meeting.  President Uwe thanked all those who participated in the Canada Day birthday cake cutting, particularly Ken Zollner and Anne Carrier who helped organize.

Rotary Information
  1. Please review the club duties in the roster, and pick a task to help the club beginning in July.  Many hands make light work and dividing up the roles within the club will balance the workload amongst all of us!!
Rotary Presentations
  • Club Secretary Doug Fleming did a quick presentation on attendance in Rotary, and some changes over the years.  The focus is not so much on compulsory attendance, more around the theme of "come when your able and do what you can".  Doug has completed the final attendance figures for 2015 - 2016 and our club had 30 members with perfect attendance.  Our club had average meeting attendance of almost 40 members, and almost as many make ups on a weekly basis. Four members were presented with perfect attendance pins, for significant consecutive yearly attendance.
    • Marg Mazerolle  - 18 years
    • Dick Bide             - 24 years
    • Uwe Krickhahn   - 25 years
    • Adolf Seiler         - 34 years

Rotary Reminders
  • President Uwe reminded the club of Al Garden's upcoming birthday party, on Sat July 23 from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Medicine Hat Lodge, all are welcome.
  • President Uwe also notified the club that the President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Alberta, Dave Tirpin would be speaking to the club on Monday August 22nd.  This is a first, and a great excuse to invite a guest to the meeting.
  • Also, work is ongoing to have local entrepreneur and philanthropist Bill Yuill address the club in Sept.
Prospective Members:
The club is actively recruiting new members. The membership committee, lead by Membership Director, Jenny Hetherington, would be happy to assist anyone who is considering proposing a member and would like feedback or help with the process.  One of our Strategic Plan targets is to have 100 active, engaged members for our Centennial celebration in 2018.

The following individuals have been proposed for membership (this is the second printing of their names)

Krista Lawson (Real Estate Appraiser)
Mathew Marsey
Jamie White (Businessman)
Susan Grey (Scholar)
Connelly Sherwick
B J Gove
Tom Sorbie
Jillian Koch (Accountant)

Update on Process - further to last week's presentation by Membership Chairperson
  • We have had occasion in the past where a person was introduced as a "Prospective Rotarian", but for one reason or another membership was denied after the usual vetting process.
  • Situations like this can create animosity towards Rotary in general and toward those dealing with the denied individual, so a better method is needed.
  • A new form will be posted on our website to improve communication with the prospective member.
  • Once a prospective member is vetted by both the Membership Committee, and if approved then ratified by the Board of Directors and subsequently by the membership at large (through posting in the Lubricator), the sponsor will be given liberty to approach the proposed member with an "Application for Membership"
  • Since that person has already been vetted, induction should follow within a few weeks of acceptance.

Up Coming Events:
  • Information on the Waterton-Glacier Peace Park assembly was available at the front desk and a power point presentation was downloaded on the Club website.  If you are interested, register on the assembly website for the Sept 16 - 18 event.

Guest speaker today El Robertson - Redcliff Citizen's on Patrol

Our guest speaker today was El Robertson, the leader of Redcliff Citizens on Patrol.  They are a group of around 40 ordinary citizens who are the extra eyes and ears of the RCMP and provide patrol service around the Town of Redcliff area. Their group (COPS for short) is one of 68 in the province, assisting in making communities safer.  El gave a summary of their work and answered a number of questions about their activities, the methods they are allowed to use and some of their areas of greatest focus.  They provided over 500 volunteer hours through the course of the year and can be called to testify in court if necessary.  They use both marked and unmarked vehicles, as well as ATV's, horseback and even bicycles.

El was introduced by our new Program chairperson, Heather Bach and thanked by President Uwe.
