President's Message
President Uwe Krickhahn welcomed everyone to this meeting.

Rotary Information
  • President Uwe gave us an update on Rotary International and the benefit of giving to RI so that we can get the funds back as a matching grant.
Rotary Presentations
  • Uwe talked about the "Jane's Walk" over 3 days of Sept 30 to Oct 2nd. Each walk only has 15 people and is a very informative way to see our city. This is a Rotary sponsored event.
  • We are coming up to the 100th anniversary for the Rotary Foundation this year and the 100th anniversary for our club in 2018.
Rotary Reminders
  • A reminder that our new DG, Neil Berg meets with our club executive at 10:00 am on Monday Sept 19th, and will address the club at our noon meeting that day.
Prospective Members:
The club is actively recruiting new members. The membership committee, lead by Membership Director, Jenny Hetherington, would be happy to assist anyone who is considering proposing a member and would like feedback or help with the process.  One of our Strategic Plan targets is to have 100 active, engaged members for our Centennial celebration in 2018.

Meeting Reminder:
As many in the club know, we recently had a member resign, due to extreme hearing loss.  Because hearing difficulties are experienced by a number of Rotarians and guests, one of our members put together a list of helpful reminders to ensure we do our best to accommodate those with auditory challenges.

- Speak slowly and distinctly.  Slow, concise speech can be learned and become habit-forming.
- Use the "4 P's" - persistent, patient, practice with a positive attitude.  Emphasize each key word in a sentence with a slight pause.
- USE the handheld microphone, both for comments and during club activities.
- Keep table conversation to a minimum, out of respect for those speaking and to avoid background noise that is distracting.

With a little practice, we can help everyone in the club both hear and understand, both as a courtesy and to help engage all members in the club.

Up Coming Events:
  • Information on the Waterton-Glacier Peace Park assembly was available at the front desk and a power point presentation was downloaded on the Club website.  If you are interested, register on the assembly website for the Sept 16 - 18 event.

Medicine Hat Youth Action Society
We are pleased that Melissa Pearl has joined us to give us some insight into the Medicine Hat Youth Action Society.

The society was founded in 1997 as a drop in and wellness center for youth ages 11 to 17. They provide an outreach with support from Social services.
They currently have some 20-25 members during the summer and 12-15 during the school year. The society operates from 4 to 9 on a daily basis offering many planned activities at the center. They encourage the youth to be active members of the community participating as helpers for events like the last random acts of kindness. The youth actively raise funds for their activities and events like bottle drives. They are also active with the Alberta Children's Hospital with annual visits to the children in the hospital.

A good presentation aided by a power point slides and pictures.
Many Questions where asked and answered.

Deb Best was on the original board that started the society and was very happy that Melisa was able to come give information and an update on activities.
