Meeting Information
President Meeting Remarks:

President Mark Sorenson welcomed everyone to the meeting today, it has been an usual start to the year, but it was great to see so many faces joining us today..

Dave Panabaker encouraged Rotarians to redouble their efforts to sell the tickets for Club 1000, the Festival is still "on", although a virtual Festival will be a first for all of us.  This raffle is our principle fundraising for the Music Festival. (as of January 17th, we have 461 paid tickets in the draw barrel, and $23,050 in the bank).  With both the Saamis and Sunrise club, as well as the local Kinsman club, cash raffles done at Christmas, some of our competition has disappeared.

Rotary Club "What-z New":
  • A new club laptop is in our future, the current one will not provide the service required to stream our meetings.
  • If our hybrid meetings continue in the future, a few more meeting helpers will be required to help run cameras and sound.  We are all learning as we go along here, but these type of meetings are manpower intensive.
Rotary Club Membership Update:
  • If you are interested in helping this working membership team, please contact Mike Christie.
Rotary Club Information:
  • Housekeeping:
    • Please collect club draw items.  It is an important part of our meeting and the funds generated help to run the club.
    • If you have a Meeting Minute, please phone or email the Newsletter and we'll include it.
    • Board minutes can be found on ClubRunner, under Club Documents.
Upcoming Club Program, Activities, and Meetings
  • Our next "ZOOM" meeting will be Monday, January 25 at noon, it will be a business meeting, introduction of the new Board and our AGM.
  • The DG and President Mark have requested that we limit our in person gatherings while COVID cases are rising in the community. Our meetings will be virtual until at least Monday February 8th that is currently our first scheduled " in person" meeting, but don't hold your breath!

Edward Lipin Classification talk
The Rotary Club enjoyed a Classification talk and presentation from Edward Lipin, a new Rotarian this year.  Edward began his presentation by clearing his lap of cats, and making sure he could access his computer without fear of "attack" from the relocated feline.
He titled the presentation "the first 34 years of Edward Lipin", and did a wonderful job of sharing his life experience so far.  He spent most of his youth in Elora, Ontario, a beautiful mill town and tourist area in Southern Ontario.  He joined the military at age 19 as a Local Communication and IT Technician, and did a six month tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2009.  He spoke about some of his private sector jobs after leaving the military in 2013, and how he ended up in Medicine Hat as the Director of Technology for Medicine Hat School District # 76.  He has finished his MBA very recently with the University of Fredericton and now looks forward to a little more free time.  He and his partner Tara have 5 rescue cats, some Canadian and some American.  He enjoys squash, crossfit and NFL football (he's a Pittsburgh Steeler fan by marriage).

He talked about the impact of COVID on education, particularly the introduction of the online HUB, and how that might affect elementary school going forward.

A number of questions were asked and answered, welcome to Medicine Hat Edward and Tara, and we look forward to your participation in our club and our community.

Meeting News
Guests:
  • No guests, just "old" Rotarians.
Club Draw:
  • No draws this week.
Minute People:
  • Kitt Brand gave a quick minute about the new Kitchen project that the International Committee is working on in Nairobi, Kenya.  One of the local clubs has advised that they will assist us with communication and photos of the kitchen as it is installed.  Kitt wanted to pass along their website, and specifically mention how they do their introduction of a new Board...hopefully we'll see some singing and dancing at our AGM next week?  The link is https://rotarycluboflangata.org  Enjoy!
  • Milan Vujovic passed along a link for an explanation of a "virtual" Festival, for all who have questions. https://www.rotarymusicfestival.com/festival-2021/virtual-festival-2021.  Jillian provided the update that we have 140 individual performers registered for the Festival and about 500 individual performances.  That is certainly "down" from past years, but given that this is a odd year, we are quite happy with the response.  Delynne has received a grant from the City for the COVID costs of the Festival, which will help defray some of the unusual expenses.  Both the Rosebowl competition and the Stars of the Festival will be held at St Barnabas Church, they will be live but there will not be an audience.  They will be streamed on Facebook and available on YouTube.
  • Terry Brekko spoke about another major fundraising activity of Rotary for the Music Festival, the program advertising and "Patrons of the Festival" endowment that we maintain at the CFSEA.  With a virtual Festival, and without a printed program, advertising is different but the fundraising is still important.  Tax receipts for 2020 contributions to the endowment should be available this week, and hopefully those patrons will still support us.  Don't forget to get your package from Dairy Queen in Crescent Heights.
  • Terry Cooper provided the following update for team "Freewheel".
    • "We’ve now finished repairing most of the bikes and they are ready for distribution. Twelve have been given to the Salvation Army (another allotment scheduled later), 5 each have been scheduled for distribution to the Women’s Shelter and the Lynx House while 3 will go to the Medicine Hat Library. Those bikes that could not be repaired without significant time and financial resources (bent derailleurs, wheels, etc.) were stripped for parts (tires, tubes, reflectors, grips, petals, etc.) which will be used for future repairs. We are still getting bikes donated from the public (Peter has been given an electric bike that needs some electrical repairs - see attached photo). Over the next few weeks the committee will begin preparing the proposal for another 25-30 bikes from the Police compound as well as coming up with a list for distribution to other non-profit groups (Miywasin Centre, international students in college residence, North Flats Community Association, Saamis Immigration, etc.). Peter Mueller is also working on a communication piece for the Rotary magazine."
  • Margie Booyens is looking for Rotarians to volunteer to serve on our board for the year 2021-2022.  There is a need for at least 3 more volunteers.
  • Bruce Shepherd mentioned that the local Archeological Society will be meeting on Wednesday and their special guest speaker will be Jack Brink, who will take the group on a "Rock Art Tour of AB".  Call Bruce if you'd like to join them.
  • Dave Panabaker mentioned that Club Leadership Team training is coming up.  A recent email from District is a reminder that Part 1 is Feb 20th and Part 2 is Feb 27th.  You can register for Part 1 with this link https://rotary5360.ca/event/club-leadership-team-training-workshop--1
  • Dave Panabaker also encouraged all Rotarians to sign up for the next Rotary training webinar, titled "Indigenous Relations".  It will be Wednesday evening, Jan 20th at 7:00 pm.  Registration in advance on the District website is required, follow this link  https://rotary5360.ca/event/january-club-learning-webinar
