Stories
Classification Talk - Alain Geurard
Alain Guerard was introduced as our speaker today, to give his classification talk by his club sponsor, Dave Panabaker.  Alain described himself as being a very lucky person all his life.  He thanked Joe Hrankowski, whose reclassification talk he heard and that prompted him to make some notes so he wouldn't forget something important that he wanted to say.
Alain was born and raised in Montreal, and they had a good life, good schools and good friends.  He said that other than some summer trips to the farm, he never left the "Island", and was very happy.  When he was 16 he decided that he wanted to join the Canadian Armed Forces, and became a cadet destined for the infantry.  However, 5 years at the Royal Military College and poor eyesight resulted in him graduation as a logistics officer.

He got married to Joanne after graduation, and they have been together for 52 years.  They have two children, their daughter has been a police officer but is now studying for a degree in education.  Their son is a geologist in Calgary.  Most importantly, they have 4 grandkids.  His career took him to many locations around this country and he retired from the military in 1995 as the DCO of the School of Logistics.
\
Upon retirement, he found a job at KPMG in supply chain management and has continued to work in that field over the past 20 years.  He has been involved in larger projects with firms such as Pfizer, with the Canadian Blood Service, and overseas with fuel logistics in Sudan and container loads of relief supplies for the Ukraine.  His work is gradually tapering off, but he still gets calls and puts in about one day a week. He has volunteered at AJ Loan Cupboard over the past year, and both the Esplanade and Co-op Place. He descibed himself as a "WYSIWYG" guy, "what you see is what you get.

He was thanked by Past District Governor Sandy Mackay, and presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship, our tradition for new members and we look forward to Alain's ideas and energy in the club for years to come.

Reminders about important Minutes:

Bingo
Dave Panabaker advised that invitations are now out for sign up to the next Rotary Bingo on Friday May 19, an evening session.  This happens to be the Friday of the first long weekend in the summer, so volunteers may be at a premium.  If you are around, please consider signing up and helping.

Rosebowl Winners Concert
Dave Panabaker and Don Davis, and Anne Carrier advised that invitations are out for our Rosebowl Winners "command" performance.  It will be held at the MH College Cultural Center, Recital Hall on Tuesday May 16th, at 7:00 pm.  Everyone is invited and it's free!  Please bring your partner along and show off the talent that the Festival supports.

District Conference Report
Margie Booyens spoke for a few minutes about the recent District Conference, with a theme of "Dream the Future".  She reviewed some of the District statistics, mentioned several of the programs at the event and the wonderful opportunity it was for fellowship and building relationships in the District.  Gail Halderman also spoke about some of the good presentations done regarding Indigenous Relations, and talk us all the Blackfoot word for "hello", which is "OKI".

Interact Club Dinner Invitation
Peter Mueller advised that the date of Monday June 5th had been selected for the annual dinner meeting between our club and the MH High School Interact students.  That Monday happens to be a ZOOM business meeting at noon, so an evening "in-person" meeting works pretty well.  Please arrive at 5:30 pm, there will be a social time and introductions before dinner.  Cost is $25.00/person and the invitations for sign up have gone out.

Golf after Rotary startup
Dale Stein advised that the first Rotary Golf will be Monday May 15th, at approximately 1:50 pm at the Connaught Golf Club.  Invitations have gone out for that as well.

Sunrise Rotary E-bike Raffle Tickets
The e-bike raffle generates funds for the Sunrise Rotary Club to sponsor community and international causes, one of which is literacy, through the “Sunrise Rotary Ride the Road to Reading” program at the Medicine Hat Public Library, for grade 4 students in the city.  Use this link to buy tickets with a credit card: https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/ticketing/18de336b-5b29-4ee9-8e0a-81ade75a8684

Sunrise Rotary Club anniversary: June 20: SAVE THE DATE!
Just a reminder of the 25th anniversary celebration of the chartering of the Sunrise Club which will take place in the evening of Tuesday June 20, 2023 at Paradise Valley. The draw for the two e-bikes will be done same evening. There will be an outside dinner starting at 5pm. Cost: $25 p/p for the meal. A cash bar will be available. All are welcome - BRING GUESTS!

The Medicine Hat Club chartered the Sunrise Club in June 1998. Past President of our Club, Mark Sorenson, was one of the charter members.

Team Freewheel Bike project: Terry Cooper encourages everyone to visit the project at 551 Spencer Street (Knowles Electric building). Thursday afternoons through the summer are the best time to swing by for a cup of coffee and a chat with the team working on the bikes. Active involvement in the project would be warmly welcomed!

Meeting Room Setup
John John needs assistance setting up the meeting room on a go forward basis. The time commitment is about an hour before the meeting, starting at 11:00 am and about a half hour after the meeting, usually ending around 1:30 pm.  If you are willing to help, please contact John or Dave Panabaker.

Family of Rotary
  • It was great to see Dawn Barr back at the meeting today, standing on both feet, although still healing from her recent broken leg.
  • We wish Terry and Lyndel Brekko well, they are still dealing with the aftereffects of her broken leg and the healing process is very slow.
  • Funeral of former Rotarian Brian Webster is Saturday May 13th at 11:00 am in the Pattison's funeral chapel.
  • The Rotary Club sends along our prayers and best wishes to Pam Partis, spouse of Rotarian Terry Partis as she battles a new health challenge.  Although they are far away at this time, we will keep them close in our hearts.
Please keep a Board Member informed about members health changes so that information can be provided to the club through the Weekly News.
