Acting President Dave Panabaker called the meeting to order, thanking everyone for joining in on what would be the last fully online meeting of the Club. Dave intimated that future meetings were likely to be a hybrid of in-person at the Lodge, with a ‘Zooming in’ option for those unable to be physically present.
This is the last week for the sale of Club1000 tickets. Dave, Glen and Doug will be in contact with those who still need to hand in their tickets and/or money. The draw will take place on Sunday 20 March during the Stars of the Festival at St Barnabas Church. Attendance options: in-person, Zoom or Facebook.
Dave introduced our guest speaker, Kevin Shufflebotham, who joined the Medicine Hat College as President and CEO in April 2019.
Kevin has a Masters of Arts in Leadership and Training from the Royal Roads University. He was provost at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), Director of operations with the office of the president at MacEwan University, and has held various management positions with the Government of Alberta’s Ministry of Advanced Education.
FINANCIAL MOTIONS
1. Special Olympics Canada 2026:
The following motion, of which notice was given on February 28, 2022, was passed unanimously:
“Moved that the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat authorize the sponsorship of a selected sport for the Special Olympics Canada 2026 National Summer Games of $6,000.”
A preference for the sponsorship of swimming was expressed, bearing the Club’s historical involvement with swimming and pools.
2. Rotary Zones 28 and 32 Interact Conference
Club Secretary, Doug Fleming, put forward the following motion, the notice for which had been presented at a previous Club meeting:
"Moved that the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat approve expenses of up to $2,000 for two representatives to attend the Zone 28 and 32 Interact Conference in Calgary in October 2022".
The motion was passed unanimously.
This amount will cover the costs of one Interact student and Peter Mueller, the Club Director of Youth Services. It was noted that Saamis Club would be sponsoring one student and the hope was expressed that Sunrise would also sponsor a student, so that a total of three students from Medicine Hat, plus Peter, would be in attendance.

Kevin Shufflebotham, President and CEO of the Medicine Hat College since April 2019, bowled us over with his enjoyment of living in the Medicine Hat community and his commitment to the College staff and students.
Shortly after starting at the College, a strategic planning process was undertaken, involving all stakeholders and exemplifying Kevin’s vision to plan WITH stakeholders, working as a collective. The most important stakeholders? The students.
The College has five exciting priorities:
New program development
Offering ‘high flex’ learning
To offer own degrees
Expanding the cultural centre, development a stimulating space for students and expanding the fitness centre which will be open to the public
An Innovation Centre which will connect industry, faculty and students to solve problems
After the exploration of alternatives, the MHC Board has decided, for a number of good reasons, that the College will remain a Comprehensive Community College, rather than becoming a Polytechnic or a University.
Kevin fielded a number of questions and was then thanked by Dave.
