Meeting Information
President Meeting Remarks:
Our Zoom meeting today was chaired by President-elect Terry Partis, who ably subbed in for President Mark.  PE Terry started the meeting with a moment of silence to honor Rotarian Al Garden who passed away one week ago.
Terry was able to attend the funeral, in addition to a few other Rotarians, so the club was well represented.
President Mark had mentioned last week that our annual contribution to the Canadian Legion has been made.  Unfortunately due to COVID there will not be a wreath laying ceremony at the Cenetaph, a limited attendance event will be held at the Legion.  Rotary District 5360 is providing an "on line" Remembrance Day service on Nov 11, from 10:30 till noon.  If you would like to participate, please register on the District webpage at
Alternatively, a number of people will just be standing on their front steps for a minute of silence, as per the attached.
Rotary Club "What-z New":
  • A new club laptop is in our future, the current one wasn't up to the task and we all thank Anne Christie for the use of hers.
  • If our hybrid meetings continue in the future, a few more meeting helpers will be required to help run cameras and sound.  We are all learning as we go along here, but these type of meetings are manpower intensive.
Rotary Club Membership Update:
  • If you are interested in helping this working membership team, please contact Mike Christie.

Updates on 3 Rotary fronts
The Rotary Club enjoyed updates and feedback on three area's of activity in the world of Rotary.
First, PDG Sandy Mackay spoke briefly about the World Polio Day event last week, and some of the history around polio and Rotary work to eradicate the disease.  He was grateful that a number of Rotarians took this opportunity to make a donation to the End Polio campaign and provided some thanks to those who helped organize the publicity around the event.
Sandy also spoke about Rotary Peace Fellowships, in particular a specific young man from Calgary who has taken his passion for service to the field with the Red Cross. The article can be found at this link
Next, Rotarian Roger Roy spoke about the situation in Nayarit, Mexico, through a letter from Club Rotario Bahía de Jaltemba La Peñita, who he attends when he is able to escape winter to the Pacific coast of Mexico. The letter talks about the impact of the COVID infections, and the resulting economic shutdowns in their community.  Our club had sent them a donation from our club members in the summer, which amounted to 36,700 pesos which is being used for hot meals, medical supplies and food care packages.  The letter highlights some of the challenges they face and the current dire situation without their normal seasonal tourist trade.  The letter is signed:
In closing, we again thank our Rotarian friends at Rotary Club of Medicine Hat
for your generous donation and support.
Isidro Israel Hinojosa Guzmán
Presidente 2020-2021
Club Rotario Bahía de Jaltemba – La Peñita #81838/ D-4140
Thirdly, PP Margie Booyens announced that our three new club members, who were challenged to look at the community and determine a need they could support with a donation of $1,000 will be doing a presentation at our "in-person" club meeting on Monday November 30.  It should be an exciting meeting and an interesting discussion, try not to miss it.

  • No draws this week.
Minute People:
  • PP Margie Booyens reminded Rotarians that the 2nd annual New Generations Service Exchange Online Conference is November 21 and 22.  If you are attending please register in advance by clicking on the link .
  • PP Margie also mentioned that in her PP role, she is engaging other PP in the search for our new President-elect to follow Terry Partis.  A meeting and list of eligible candidates has been sent out, and will take place after our "in-person" meeting of November 9th.
  • Doug Fleming mentioned that the Saamis Rotary Club is having a "Cheer for a Year" draw this fall, tickets are available from the Rafflebox website.
  • President Mark had passed on that the Sunrise Rotary Club is also having a Christmas 50/50 draw.  Tickets are available through the club.
  • Dave Panabaker reminded everyone that Club 1000 tickets are being distributed and we really depend on the Rotarians in the club to sell these to family, friends, the community and those who would specifically like to support the Rotary Music Festival. As a club we have 1000 tickets to sell, that averages about 20 tickets per person, so please don't delay getting after this work.
  • Several recent Rosebowl winners and participants in the Rosebowl competition will be performing a concert to benefit St Josephs home.  It promises to be a great afternoon of music, these are three outstanding musicians.  Please book the date into your calendar and join them for this wonderful event.
  • Terry Cooper mentioned that he and several other members are looking into the feasibility of purchasing some bicycles, from the spring Police Service auction for use at some of the tourist sites around the community.  If you are interested in exploring this idea, please contact Terry, Peter Mueller or PP Margie.
  • Dave Panabaker drew to everyone's attention that Rotary International and Toastmasters are joining forces on a learning partnership.  A one hour webinar is being held on Wed evening, November 4 through the District website.  Please register in advance if you are interested.
  • Dave Panabaker reminded everyone that because of the changes to meal service at the MH Lodge, registration for "in person" meetings, if you wish to have a meal, is important.  The next "in-person" meeting is November 9, and the registration email will be out the week before.  If you register properly you should receive a confirmation email in return.  If you have any questions or run into any trouble, or want to check to make sure your registration was accepted, please contact Dave.
  • If you have photos or a story to include in the Weekly News, please submit it to Dave P and we'll try to publish it.
