Meeting Information
President Meeting Remarks:

As you know, ROTARY INTERNATIONAL has a different theme each month of the Rotary year.

This month it is ROTARY FELLOWSHIPS.  I want to say a few words about FELLOWSHIP before introducing and handing over to our guest speaker.  Fellowship is one of the two main reasons why our members joined the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat.

During this COVID-19 lockdown and then safe distancing period, fellowship has been somewhat curtailed.

I want to compliment the many members of our Club who took the plunge and have familiarized ourselves with a technology that was previously unknown to us – Zoom! We’ve been having great Zoom meetings since April – and enjoying a limited bit of FELLOWSHIP through this means.

But there’s no holding Rotarians back:

· You will remember that on Monday 1 June, our Club’s 102nd birthday, we had a social event and some much needed FELLOWSHIP on the new Rotary Centennial Trail – keeping the required 2 meter distance!

· This past Thursday we joined our valued and long-standing member, Joe Chacko, to say thank you and farewell, at the Mezz in the Beveridge Building.

We’ve also been enjoying FELLOWSHIP at a different level – joining RI and D virtual webinars and meetings… and even the meetings of other Clubs.

Tomorrow evening, at 6 pm MT, there will be another opportunity for virtual ROTARY FELLOWSHIP:

We’re invited to join the members of e-Club Canada One, to witness and celebrate one of our own members, Kitt Brand, becoming an Associate member of that Club. I hope you can make it!

She advised there is Elder abuse in Medicine Hat even though we may find that hard to believe. The last census shows 19,995 adults over 55 years, less than 2,000 have experienced Elder Abuse. Not all cases are reported.

Definition of Elder Abuse is: ‘Action or inaction by a person in a trust position towards an Elder’

Types of Abuse: Neglect, Financial, Physical, Mental, Health

Local Activities: Local Coalition formed to provide training to professionals in this field.

Core Alberta is providing information at a provincial level to make more people aware, through promotion, sharing ideas and best practices.

Situation in Medicine Hat.

· Active thriving coalition.

· Working with province on updates to ‘Power of Attorney’ legislation

· Need for Case worker (Dedicated staff) funding required. Shantel is currently handling some cases but only within the City so need for someone who could cover city & district.

· Concerns may be an increase due to isolation as a result of COVID 19.

Veiner Centre which is a resource to seniors currently closed but they are looking at ways to open and provide the activities/services while adhering to the COVID guidelines. I.E how do you social distance & play cards? Sanitizing issues, etc. The City may also be looking for new model to run the Veiner Centre.  A copy of Shantel's presentation is loaded into the Club Documents section of our website.

Following a Q & A Session, President Margie thanked our speaker.

  • Dave Panabaker reminded Rotarians that Theresa Eisenbarth is still working on the Interact Garage Sale.  "I'm still collecting for the sale for the students.  I spoke to Sue Withers and it will be highly unlikely that we can plan for this at the school any time soon.  I'm going to do the sale myself, right down there at the Rotary Sea Can.  I'll set up tables, mark everything.  If you have items, please hold onto them and you can contact me to arrange a time to meet and place the items into storage.  The Sea Can is located behind the Bingo Hall on Industrial Ave.  All the proceeds will be given to the Interact Club."
  • President Margie Booyens, the Board of Directors and Members of the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat.
