President Mike Christie welcomed members to this first of three meetings in a row at the MH Lodge. He advised that the Monthly Rotary theme for September was Basic Education and Literacy.
Although this meeting was scheduled as a Budget approval presentation, President Mike started the meeting by reviewing the 9 items which were part of our updated Strategic Plan. Those need to be kept in mind, while we review the financial needs of the club.
Those goals from the Strategic Plan were;
Increase the membership by 25%;
Attract an equal number of members and attendees to our existing events, projects and activities;
Investigate and identify a major community project which the Club can initiate or participate in with other clubs or organizations;
Continue to look at international projects the Club can become involved with;
Hold a major membership recruitment event;
Continue to support established activities such as The Rotary Music Festival; Lottery; Team Free Wheel Bicycle program; Prairie Gleaners;
Be mentioned in the local media once per month;
Maintain information flow to the membership through Minute People, Announcements and the Newsletter;
Meet Budget
With that introduction a wide ranging discussion took place concerning the draft budget. President Mike reviewed a few loose ends in the summary page and advised that once our Treasurer Gail was back from holidays, and the Board had a chance to review the comments the budget would be brought back to the club for formal approval.
Mike did indicate that the 2024-2025 Annual dues have been set at $325/member.
Mike also mentioned that two District Grant items have come forward over the past week, so he gave us an update.
Our 23-24 DG application for $7,500 (plus $2,500 from our club) for support of the new sound system at the Monarch Theatre has been approved. We just received this confirmation from Sharon McDonnell at Saamis Rotary.
Our 22-23 DG, which was for the trail signage on Rotary Centennial trail will require a refund of a small amount of the grant, as the ultimate cost was not as high as expected. This will be done once Gail is back.
Some fun was then had, because we had 10 spare minutes, so the Sgt-at-Arms Dave Stalwick fined a lot of those present and collected Happy Dollars from most everyone as well. A good way to end a budget discussion.

Minute Reminders:
FUNDRAISING AND FUN: BINGO
As noted in the first section of this newsletter, club members are invited to actually PLAY bingo themselves on Wednesday 18 September, with Medalta overseeing the evening. The purpose is for Rotarians to have a fun evening together, while learning how to actually play the game!
The next Bingo session for which volunteers are being sought, is on Wednesday 25 September. Dave Panabaker needs only one floor worker at this point, so if you have the evening spare it would be a great time to help out. A club Board meeting is also scheduled for that evening, so if you aren't tied up with that meeting, come on out and help!
ITS NEVER TOO EARLY TO BE THINKING ABOUT CHRISTMAS
Margie Booyens advised that the "all club" Christmas Party has been scheduled for Sunday December 8th, at the Desert Blume Clubhouse. It was a great event last year and hopefully this year it will be bigger and better.
TEAM FREEWHEEL WORK OPPORTUNITY
Terry Cooper advised that he is at the Team Freewheel shop most afternoons right now, and welcomed everyone and anyone to stop by. He did say he'd like to see some folks there on Thursday afternoon, September 19th after 1:30 pm. A send out of repaired bikes is scheduled for that afternoon, so it would be a great time to have Rotary well represented.
DISTRICT GRANT QUALIFICATION WORKSHOP
The annual qualification workshop, held over ZOOM, will be Saturday October 19th, from 9:00 am until noon. Attendance by a member of the club is mandatory if we wish to apply for a District Grant in 24-25. Pre-registration is required on the District website, use the following link to sign up. https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_qzEpSy1pSDqFsH4xktaDew
CANADA HUMANITARIAN - now REALhumanitarian
The annual fundraiser dinner will be held on 25 October. Tickets are $100 pp. President Elect Milan Vujovic encouraged attendance, Rotarians perhaps even making up a table at this gala event.
D5360 NEW GENERATIONS SERVICE EXCHANGE UPDATE
Beatriz (Bia) Souza is in Medicine Hat! Maarten and Nadia Deenen hosted a get-together (with delicious food) of four of Bia’s five Rotarian host families in the back garden of their home on Sunday 15th September. It was a great relaxed time of introductions and getting to know one another! Bia starts the vocational side of her NGSE program on Tuesday (17 September), spending the day with Superintendent Reagan Weeks and Assistant Superintendent Jason Peters, to plan her mornings in different schools in these two Public School Districts.
Bia is in Medicine Hat until 21 November 2024.
TERRY FOX FUNDRAISER: Sunday 15 September
The 2024 Terry Fox fundraiser was a well attended, fun event, on a beautiful morning, raising funds for cancer research. The run/walk took participants on the Sunrise Rotary Club trail, around the Medicine Hat College. From our Club, Milan and Almira Vujovic, Nadia Deenen, NGSE participant Bia Souza, and Johan and Margie Booyens, took on the challenge!
FUNDRAISER FOR AGRICULTURE DISCOVERY CENTRE (ADC)
In December, the Monarch Theatre will be putting on a show to raise funds for the ADC located at the Irvine School. Watch this space for details in forthcoming issues.
CLUB COMMITTEES
Two club committees are needing support from members. The Dinner Club needs a champion to take over from Dick Bide. Dave Stalwick needs two volunteers to join the Club Servicecommittee, to take care of the 'meeting venue' side of things. Dave mentioned that another meeting to focus on a preferred club meeting venue would be coming up.
In addition, members are also encouraged to consider joining the Club's Program Committee and Community Service committee, both of which are well populated but are open to new 'blood', new ideas, new ways of doing things and doing new things!
Family of Rotary
Please keep a Board Member informed about members health and/or any other changes, so that information can be provided to the club through the Weekly News.
The Rotary Club of Medicine Hat has returned to meeting in person. Our first meeting of every month is a ZOOM business meeting. Check the club calendar, which is usually up to date for our meeting locations and program.
