Meeting Information
President Meeting Remarks:

President Mark Sorenson welcomed everyone to the meeting today.  He was very pleased to announce that Terry Cooper has joined the current Board to look after International Service.  He will review all the outstanding issues and have some reports over the next few months.  We all welcome Terry to the Board and thank him for looking after this very important piece of Rotary Service.

President Mark also indicated that our ZOOM meetings will likely continue for some time into the future, with delay's in vaccinations and the virus mutations, it could be some time (Mark guested April) before we are back together in person.

Glen Presley encouraged Rotarians to redouble their efforts to sell the tickets for Club 1000, the Festival is still "on", although a virtual Festival will be a first for all of us.  This raffle is our principle fundraising for the Music Festival. (as of January 24th, we have 478 paid tickets in the draw barrel, and $23,900 in the bank).  With both the Saamis and Sunrise club, as well as the local Kinsman club, cash raffles done at Christmas, some of our competition has disappeared.  Glen mentioned that he, Doug Fleming and Dave Panabaker all have extra tickets, if someone runs short.  As well, if you have a number of sold tickets, please had them in to any of the three Rotarians on the committee and we'll get them counted.

Rotary Club "What-z New":
  • A new club laptop is in our future, the current one will not provide the service required to stream our meetings.
  • If our hybrid meetings continue in the future, a few more meeting helpers will be required to help run cameras and sound.  We are all learning as we go along here, but these type of meetings are manpower intensive.
Rotary Club Membership Update:
  • If you are interested in helping this working membership team, please contact Mike Christie.
Rotary Club Information:
  • Housekeeping:
    • Please collect club draw items.  It is an important part of our meeting and the funds generated help to run the club.
    • If you have a Meeting Minute, please phone or email the Newsletter and we'll include it.
    • Board minutes can be found on ClubRunner, under Club Documents.
Upcoming Club Program, Activities, and Meetings
  • Our next "ZOOM" meeting will be Monday, February 1st at noon, it will be a presentation by Laura Chambers, of Toastmasters.

Next Executive and AGM
As is the custom of our club, the Past President, Margie Booyens introduced those Rotarians who have volunteered to serve on the Board and Executive for the 2021-2022 Rotary Year.

They will be inducted in late June, to take off for July 1 but those people introduced today were.

Past President - Mark Sorenson
President - Terry Partis
President Elect - Melanie Harty

Secretary - Doug Fleming
Treasurer - Gail Halderman

Directors at Large
Terry Cooper
Mike Christie
Peter Mueller
Dave Panabaker

Past President Margie advised that their are two spots available as Directors, should anyone wish to volunteer.  Not having enough Directors will hinder some of our service efforts, as four can't cover the work of six.

Terry Partis thanked Margie for all her work over the past three years in the President stream, and Margie thanked outgoing Director Glen Presley for his service over the past four years.

The second half of our AGM was a review of the Year end 2020 Financials with Treasurer Gail Halderman, who advised on our current financial position and how our reserves are sitting.
Gail spoke about the large spending in the previous year, related to the Rotary Centennial Trail along South Boundary Road.  All those expenditures were run through our club books, so some pretty big numbers accumulated in the Community Service column.  Gail advised that the club has approximately $30,000 of unrestricted funds in the bank, after the completion of transfers to the Music Festival for last year and  may need some of that money to fill in for our Club 1000 raffle if it doesn't sell out.  As well, our commitment to the "Dunmore Park" tree planting will use up some of those funds as well.

Several other projects, such as signage on Rotary Centennial Trail and other Service Projects will be affected by the availability of District Grants and a restoration of bingo.  It appears we will not have a casino in this Rotary year, so our funding will be tight.

Alternative methods of fundraising are being discussed by the incoming Executive and the Community Service team.  More information on that to come.

Club Draw:
  • No draws this week.
Minute People:
  • From last week, Milan Vujovic passed along a link for an explanation of a "virtual" Festival, for all who have questions. https://www.rotarymusicfestival.com/festival-2021/virtual-festival-2021.  Jillian provided the update that we have 140 individual performers registered for the Festival and about 500 individual performances.  That is certainly "down" from past years, but given that this is a odd year, we are quite happy with the response.  Delynne has received a grant from the City for the COVID costs of the Festival, which will help defray some of the unusual expenses.  Both the Rosebowl competition and the Stars of the Festival will be held at St Barnabas Church, they will be live but there will not be an audience.  They will be streamed on Facebook and available on YouTube.
  • From last week, Terry Brekko spoke about another major fundraising activity of Rotary for the Music Festival, the program advertising and "Patrons of the Festival" endowment that we maintain at the CFSEA.  With a virtual Festival, and without a printed program, advertising is different but the fundraising is still important.  Tax receipts for 2020 contributions to the endowment should be available this week, and hopefully those patrons will still support us.  Don't forget to get your package from Dairy Queen in Crescent Heights.
  • Terry Cooper provided the following update for team "Freewheel".  A total of 5 refurbished bikes were delivered to McMan Youth, Family and Community Services Association last week by Ken Feser.  The club received a very nice acknowledgement and letter of thanks from Jackie Middleton.
  • Dave Panabaker mentioned that the 2021 Rotary District 5360 has gone "virtual".  It will be held over one day, Saturday April 17th.   The registration link will be available soon.
  • Dave Panabaker mentioned that Club Leadership Team training is coming up.  A recent email from District is a reminder that Part 1 is Feb 20th and Part 2 is Feb 27th.  You can register for Part 1 with this link https://rotary5360.ca/event/club-leadership-team-training-workshop--1
