President Meeting Remarks:

President Mark Sorenson welcomed everyone to this somewhat shortened and late ZOOM meeting.  We had a total of 24 people at the meeting.
Mark expressed our sorrow and sympathy at the loss of Jim White's spouse Anne and a friend to all of us in Rotary.  If at all possible, please try and attend the service "virtually" on Wednesday.  President Mark also encouraged everyone to stay safe and help stop the spread of COVID.

President Mark also congratulated Kurt Kowalchuk of the Rotary Club of Calgary Downtown, wh has been nominated to be District Governor of our District for the year 2023-2024.  His nomination will be confirmed at the District Conference AGM in June.

Please continue to sell the tickets for Club 1000, our principle fundraising for the Music Festival.

Rotary Club "What-z New":
  • A new club laptop is in our future, the current one will not provide the service required to stream our meetings.
  • If our hybrid meetings continue in the future, a few more meeting helpers will be required to help run cameras and sound.  We are all learning as we go along here, but these type of meetings are manpower intensive.
Rotary Club Membership Update:
  • If you are interested in helping this working membership team, please contact Mike Christie.
Rotary Club Information:
  • Housekeeping:
    • Please collect club draw items.  It is an important part of our meeting and the funds generated help to run the club.
    • If you have a Meeting Minute, please phone or email the Newsletter and we'll include it.
    • Board minutes can be found on ClubRunner, under Club Documents.
Upcoming Club Program, Activities, and Meetings
  • Our next "ZOOM" meeting will be Monday, January 4 at noon.
  • The DG and President Mark have requested that we limit our in person gatherings while COVID cases are rising in the community. Our meetings will be virtual until at least Monday January 25th, that is currently our first scheduled " in person" meeting, but don't hold our breath!
Upcoming Rotary District and International Events:
  • Mark this date in your calendars, the 2021 Rotary District Conference is May 14 - 16, 2021 in Drumheller, AB.

Future Programs:
  • The Rotary Club's Program Coordinator is Jillian Koch.  If you have future program ideas, please email Jillian at jkoch@jmhca.com

Webinar with RI President nominee Jennifer Jones
The Rotary Club of Medicine Hat was thrilled to join our sister club in Lethbridge, and many other clubs across the District for a special speech and Q/A session with incoming Rotary International President nominee, Jennifer Jones of the Rotary Club of Windsor.  Jennifer will be the first female in the history of Rotary to lead the organization and all of us are thrilled both for her and that the honor of that step towards equality is being made by a Canadian.

Jennifer was introduced by Allan Friesen, the President of the Rotary Club of Lethbridge, who acted as the Master of Ceremony for this webinar.

Jennifer was accompanied on the webinar by her niece Olivia.  Olivia is a member of one of the "Early Act" clubs in southwestern Ontario and one of the jobs of the kids is to start the meeting with the 4 way test.  You are never to young to start taking on Rotary ways.  Olivia spoke about a plastic "reuse" project, as the Environment has become the 7th area of service within Rotary and one that kids very much get behind.

Jennifer spoke about a saying coined by her brother, also a Rotarian which is "to live in the kind of society you want, you have to help to build it".  Words to live, and serve by for sure.

Jennifer talked about her interest in eradicating polio, how that organizational structure might help in the fight with COVID and how Rotary's emphasis on "diversity, equity and inclusion" is also a theme she very much endorses.  She answered a number of questions and was encouraged in the "End Polio" fight by a donation of $70,000 from Rotary District 5360 Polio chair Marlene Doherty.

One other highlight of the webinar was the singing of "O'Canada" by the Uphill Both Ways school in Malawi.
Project "Freewheel" begins
The first bikes, in this case donated by Rotarians, were delivered by Peter Mueller and Terry Cooper to the Salvation Army on Friday morning.  Each bike will be sold with a certificate for a helmet and with a sticker showing the donation from the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat.

Thanks to Peter Mueller and Roger Roy for fixing them up, prior to delivery to the Salvation Army.

Next, watch for the donation of 27 bikes recovered by the Medicine Hat Police Service, and we are hoping these can also be delivered before Christmas this year.

Guests:
  • We were all guests today, of the Rotary Club of Lethbridge and PDG Pat Killoran, for a great noon hour speech by RI President Nominee Jennifer Jones, RC of Windsor.

Minute People:
  • Margie Booyens is looking for Rotarians to volunteer to serve on our board for the year 2021-2022.  There is a need for at least 3 more volunteers.
  • If you wish to make that donation to the Santa Claus Fund, please go to https://www.mhsantafund.com and press the DONATE button.  In the "notes" section please put a note like "2020 Rotary Club Pass the Hat", so the donations can be totaled by the fund.
  • Dave Panabaker provided an update on sales of Club 1000 tickets. To date, a total of 332 tickets have been sold, recorded and placed in the draw barrel.  That leaves us about 1/3 of the way to sold out, so we have a long way to go yet...please stay on it.
  • Dawn Barr announced that in conjunction with Morgan's pizza, a total of 25 individual pizza's will be delivered to the hospital on Christmas eve, to feed the staff who are working that night and to help say thank you for looking after our community so well.
  • Dave Panabaker also encouraged all Rotarians to sign up for the next Rotary training webinar, titled "The Value of Clubrunner".  Clubrunner is the tool that runs many of our meeting, website and promotion functions, and you can always learn something from these sessions.  This one will be Wednesday evening, January 6th at 7:00 pm...for novice and experienced Rotarians alike.  Register at this link https://rotary5360.ca/event/webinar--the-value-of-clubrunner
