Meeting Information
President Meeting Remarks:

President Mark Sorenson opened the meeting by welcoming everyone back to the Medicine Hat Lodge, by leading in the singing of O'Canada and then getting a chance to finally ring the Rotary bell and begin the meeting.  His "out of order" start to the meeting would cost him later once the Sgt-at-Arms got into action.  Marks opening remarks focused on several current themes.  He began by thanking everyone who wore a mask, by encouraging those in attendance to use all the space and achieve enough social distance and to be safe.
His second theme was the important fundraiser that is rapidly approaching, from Friday August 7th thru Sunday August 9th our club will be hosting the Medicine Hat Ribfest.  President Mark spoke about the difficulty doing a fundraiser of this size for the first time, and praised Treasurer Gail Halderman for all his work on this event.  The ribs will be sold from 11 am to 9 pm each day (Sunday's cutoff is 7 pm)  The club will be selling water and soft drinks as the cars approach the rib vendors.  The orders will be taken through an iPad system and there will be limited social contact.  He encouraged Rotarians to sign up for a shift over the weekend, and spread the word about the event on social media.
Mark's third topic was the upcoming Club 1000 draw, which is actively being worked on behind the scenes and Glen Presley will be getting ready any  day now.  Glen got a good deal of valuable feedback on last years draw, and changes to the timing of ticket availability and the distribution of prizes will be done for 2021.  The draw will again be drawn at the intermission of the Stars of the Festival program, at the Music Festival's final night.

Rotary Club - "What we can do"
  • The City of Medicine Hat website has a relatively complete list of local issues....check this out as well.
  • District 5360 has provided a single website to provide up to date information on other club meetings, on activities around the District and some links to Covid-19 sources as well.

Rotary Club "What-z New":
  • The club is encouraging support for a Rotary International project of the club. The Club Rotario Bahía de Jaltemba La Peñita operates 10 soup kitchens and because of the Covid crisis, a lack of funding and many more individuals needing support the Guyobidos Mexico club needs funding.  This is the club that Rotarian Roger Roy supports while he is in Mexico.  Treasurer Gail Halderman has sent out a completely voluntary donation request based on five meals in June, so if you'd like to, please help out.  Funds totaling $2020.00 were donated (thanks to all who did) and will be transferred directly to that club.
Rotary Club Membership Update:
  • The club was delighted to finally meet our newest member "in person".  President Mark Sorenson welcomed Impa Hiriyanna to our meeting today, and her sponsor in the club Milan Vujovic presented her with the formal "welcome" package.  Welcome to the club Impa, we look forward to your contributions to the Rotary family and our community.

Guests:
  • None today.
Minute People:
  • Dave Panabaker reminded Rotarians that Theresa Eisenbarth is still working on the Interact Garage Sale.  If you have things to donate, please contact Theresa.
  • The new Rotary Board for 2020-2021 was introduced to the club, they were inducted by Zoom in June.
  • Mike Christie was experimenting with "Zoom" today and had four club members watching (and hopefully listening) to the proceedings on Zoom.  He will report on the experiment in the future.
  • Ian McLaughlin reminded Rotarians that our turn at a casino fundraiser is still set for August 20-21.  He thanked all those who had volunteers and we have a full slate for those two days.  There are a number of AGLC changes with the ongoing health crisis, so cancellation is a possibility, but we are planning to go forward.
  • Dave Panabaker took some time to explain the discussions and work which is ongoing regarding our meeting spot, we are back at the MH Lodge because it seems to be the best short term choice.  Costs are going up and logistics are somewhat difficult, but the Board and the Club Service group are in ongoing discussions with the MH Lodge.  Definitely lots more information on a go forward basis.
  • If you are interested in receiving an electronic version of "The Rotarian" please log onto MyRotary and follow this link.  There is a form to fill out, so you can save postage and trees.  You will need the information off the mailing label of your current copy of the Rotarian.  The link is https://my.rotary.org/en/node/18361 .
  • Dieter Brand mentioned to all that paying your dues and other Rotary contributions is quite easy using the Clubrunner site.  Simply "log on", go into the "Admin" area and select "My Clubrunner"....under that tab there is a selection that is titled "My Account Balance"...simply enter the information there, include a note as to what it is for and send in on to Treasurer Gail.  Once we are "back together again", a quick demo of this can be shown at a club meeting.  If anyone has difficulty, give Dieter or Dave P a call.
  • Four new Club members, Peter Mueller, Shalla Shaharyar, Igor Grujic and Elaine Behiel, are currently independently exploring needs in Medicine Hat community. They will pool their findings in August and decide, as a group, to which Association or group they will donate $1,000 on behalf of our Club. This initiative, focusing on local needs and community service, is how Past President Margie decided, with Board approval, to ‘spend’ her Presidential budget allocation. A presentation to the recipient organisation / group will be made by the four members, at a regular noon Monday meeting, possibly in September.
  • Sandy Mackay reminded all Rotarians that October is World Polio Day, and although we held a good event last year, we need to be planning for something different this year.  Please put on your thinking caps and give some feedback to the Board or Sandy, on what would be effective.
  • If you have photos or a story to include in the Weekly News, please submit it to Dave P and we'll try to publish it.
