Meeting Information
The Rotary Club continued our exploration of alternative meeting sites today, with a business meeting at the Medicine Hat College.  We were in a classroom close to the lobby, and lunch was obtained from the cafeteria.
President Bruce Shepard was at the helm, and he started off the meeting with the bell.
As this was a business meeting, President Bruce started by expressing his great pleasure at the recent District Conference, held in Drumheller this past weekend.  He thought the facility was tremendous, the speakers very informative and entertaining and many great projects on display.
Bruce also mentioned that the results of the "Why Rotary" event continue to be positive, we are hopeful that at least a half dozen memberships and several new "friends of the club" have been established.
Treasurer Gail Halderman thanked a couple of generous Rotarians who have made his life simpler this spring by donations that they made to the Rotary Music Festival on behalf of the Club.  Both Dieter and Kitt Brand and Sandy Mackay helped the club achieve its commitment to the 2024 Festival, which has freed up other funds within the club and allowed us to do a number of additional projects.  Many thanks to these folks!
Secretary Doug Fleming didn't have many things to pass on, but did advise that our next casino has been scheduled.  Our club will host the casino at the Copper Coulee Casino on Nov 30 and Dec 1 of this year, so those funds will show up in the 2024/2025 year.
Margie Booyens gave an additional update on the 2024 District Conference, which had 300 attendee's, including 10 from our club.  Beyond the normal conference stuff, including some great speakers, our club shared with MH Saamis Rotary the Glen Peacock award for outstanding service.  This award relates to the Monarch Theatre project.
Peter Mueller, Youth, Retention and Membership Director spoke about the upcoming annual Rotary-Interact meeting which we enjoy at the Medicine Hat High School.  That event is planned for the evening of Monday May 27th, so that will be an evening, partners included meeting.  It is always a great time.
President-elect Mike Christie also spoke about the results of the "Why Rotary" event, and is truly optimistic about the impact it will have on the club on a go-forward basis.

    Minute Reminders:
The next Bingo session will be on Saturday 11 May from 11:45, and a full team has volunteered.  Thanks to everyone and good luck at this fundraising event.  The next bingo is Thursday evening, May 30th.
The next two meetings of our Club, will be at the Medicine Hat College. The Monday May 13 noon meeting would be in the S wing, room S102.  Dave Stalwick will provide a summary of each potential location and organize a ballot type vote for your first and second choice.  It is his intention to speak to this at our June business meeting and to ensure that every member of the club has a voice in this decision.
Dan Kammerer and Dale Stein have scouted out all the potential future dates and believe that Saturday May 25th, from 9:30 am to noon will be the best time for the club to help with the annual "Litter Blitz" and clean up Rotary Centennial Trail.  Please put this date aside, as many hands make this less work.  A signup email has gone out, please respond when you know your Sat May 25th schedule.
Terry Cooper advised that Team Freewheel delivered another 21 bikes on Thursday last week, which brings to 450 the total number of bikes that have been provided to the community.  At least 240 of those have been handed out through Saamis Immigration, continuing our support of new members of the community.  Lots of happy faces for sure.
In addition, the Rotary Club is sponsoring an event for the Learning English students at Saamis Immigration, who are going to Police Point Park on Wednesday May 29th.  Club members are invited to attend and help the participants practice their English skills.  The bus is arriving at 10:00 am and the program at the Interpretive Center will finish at approx 11:00 am.
The winner of the 2024 Rosebowl, Sterling Clark, will be performing for the Rotary Club and guests in the Recital Hall, Cultural Center (MAYBE?, location is still to be determined) at 7:00 pm on Thursday June 6.  Please consider this a partners event, and an opportunity to invite interested parties to see one of our Music Festival alumni perform.  A reception at the Cultural Center is planned for after the performance.
A duo will be performing two concerts at the Monarch on May 12th.  The cost of each ticket is $70.00, which will return a $40.00 charitable receipt for each ticket. Given that it is Mother's Day, restaurants are going to be busy, so reservations are recommended.  The box office at the Monarch will be open Monday to Friday (8 - 5) to purchase tickets.  A great idea for something special for Mom, or a significant other!
