President's Information
President's Remarks:
The meeting today was run by Glen Presley, Director Ways and Means.  Glen performed all the regular meeting functions, in the midst of a very busy meeting.

Rotary Club Information:

President Chris and PP Karen Blewett were the program today, and brought a number of issues that were discussed at the Strategic Planning update last month to the club, for discussion on rationale and implementation.  This portion of the meeting concentrated on Club Meeting updates and alterations, a poll of those present would indicated a surprising strong tolerance for significant change (or a great deal of "discomfort").  So, expect some changes to the meetings, the schedule and activities.  One of the big driving factors is making the club more inviting to younger people, Chris provided the statistic that the average age of our club is 66 years old, and we need to lower that to be sustainable.

In case you missed it, here's a photo of the Highway cleanup crew, who did a great job on our highway section adjacent to the MH College.

2019 Rosebowl Evening
On Monday evening, April 25th, The Rotary Club was very happy to welcome the Lorentzen family to our evening meeting, and hear an amazing performance by the 2019 Winner of the Rotary Rosebowl, Laec Lorentzen.  Laec played two pieces on the cello and was accompanied by Con Shandro.

Laec was introduced by the 2019 Chairman of the Festival Committee, Milan Vujovic who did a review of the Festival history and talked about recent events.  Laec performed Haydn's Cello Concerto in C and by the modern composer Martinu, "Variations on a Theme of Rossini by Paganini".

The room was pretty full for the performance and we all wish Laec the best at Provincials.

Minute People:
  • Theresa Eisenbarth did a quick update on the MH High School Interact club.  They made approximately $390 at their last bake sale and she passed on their thanks for all the support from Rotarians.  Two students have just returned from Adventures in Citizenship and two more are headed out to RYLA in a couple of weeks.  Theresa also reminded the club of the upcoming evening meeting with the students on Monday evening, May 27.  This annual event is a great partner event for the club and introduces us to the Interact students.  Cost is expected to be $25/person, please respond when the email notices goes out.
  • Anne Carrier did a minute to solicit the Clubs interest in having a float in the Stampede Parade on Thursday July 25th.  It will involve some "pre-planning" and design meetings,  several construction evenings and a few hours of teardown and storage after the parade.  If you are interested in helping out, please contact Anne.
  • Margie Booyens did an update on our first Rotary Service Exchange student. Katharina Brauss, who is 18 from Germany.  She will be the fourth New Generation Service Exchange student in the District, and the first to come to Medicine Hat.  Right now she will arrive in Calgary on Sunday June 23 and will be returning home near the end of August.  She will be in Medicine Hat for the month of July, starting with the Canada Day cake cutting and will be able to take part in the Stampede float, the Mavericks game and our Rotary Park meeting.  She will be hosted by a number of Rotarians, and will meet with all three local clubs.  Much more information to follow, as details are ironed out.
  • Dave Panabaker announced that this years "Rotary goes to the Mavericks game" will be Saturday evening, July 27, with the game beginning at 7:05 pm  The club has the dugout deck reserved, and tickets will be available in early June, at a cost of $30 per person.  Your cost includes the game ticket, a beverage of your choice, a burger or hot dog, and either chips or popcorn.  A pretty good deal, please contact Dave if you want to reserve tickets.
  • Sandy Mackay put out reminders of the next Medicine Hat Concert Band performance, on Saturday May 25, at 7:30 pm at the Esplanade.

  • POST MEETING minute - The last weekend in May has another opportunity for Rotarians and the general public to celebrate music and youth in the Community.  Three of our Music Festival Rosebowl performers will be sharing their music on Sunday afternoon, May 26 at 3:30 pm at St Barnabas Anglican Church.  Come out and hear the pieces they will perform at the Provincial Music Festival at the end of this month.  It promises to be a great afternoon of music.
