President's Information
President's Remarks:

President Chris opened the business meeting at 12:15 pm, unfortunately the prospects of dueling pianos didn't materialized and apparently a "duet" was out of the question, so a standard musical accompaniment was made to the national anthem.

Chris reviewed a couple of important issues from the last board meeting, the Centennial project, membership and financial sustainability, and thanked everyone for being present for the important vote later in the meeting.

Chris also mentioned that the "Rotary Clothing Store", run by Sports Connection on Kingsway was "online" again, the link is below.  Sports connection has samples of the various clothing items, and you are welcome to drop by to ensure your purchased item will fit.

Finally, President Chris announced that the club Strategic Plan was up for discussion and review so Saturday November 17 had been picked as the day for that work.  The intention is to send out several questions and information updates to club members before that date, to help gather points for discussion and debate.  Please put that Saturday aside if you'd like to be part of this process.

Club Secretary Doug Fleming then took the "stage" and presented a short report on attendance.  He also provided pin recognition for several Rotarians with perfect attendance.  Specifically, the following Rotarians should be recognized.
  • John John         - 15 years of perfect attendance
  • Marg Mazerolle - 20 years of perfect attendance
  • Dick Bide           - 26 years of perfect attendance
  • Adolf Seiler        - 36 years of perfect attendance

Rotary Presentation:

President Chris reviewed the presentation that he had done last meeting, and reintroduced the financial motion for voting today.  He advised that he'd had one question over the week, specifically around the funds associated with the 2017 Gala, but felt an answer was given, and that those funds will most likely still apply to trail and park signage.

The motion was moved, seconded by Sandy Mackay.

"...moved that the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat commit $100,000 to the Centennial Trail project and make application to the Alberta Gaming & Liquor Commission to add the construction of a pedestrian and bicycle trail to the Approved Use of Proceeds List.

...it is further moved that a Request for Change of Scope and/or Time Extension be completed on the Community Facility Enhancement Program for the use of grant funds to the Centennial Trail Project."

The motion was unanimous passed.

As well, President Chris provided the following updates on several other projects.
  1. The tree planting and park project is currently delayed with studies, and will likely be Spring 2019 before we can consider anything in terms of work or funding.
  2. The Road Renaming application went through several back and forth letters with City of Medicine Hat.  On June 13, 2018 the club received notice that City Council would not support the idea of renaming Parkview Drive NE.  However, they did allude to the idea of renaming 23rd ST NW, which connects Parkview Drive and Box Springs Road.  A letter was send August 7th requesting consideration of that idea, and on Sept 14th the club received confirmation that the idea was going to City Executive for consideration with the recommendation for approval from staff.  Cross your fingers and toes, still a few steps from Council approval!

Update on MH High Interact Club
Theresa Eisenbarth, the Rotary Club liaison with the Medicine Hat High School Interact Club provided an update on the club for 2018 - 2019 with the start of the school year behind us and with some time for the students to begin the organization process.  Theresa and Anne Carrier have been helping get the club organized this year, and they have 15 - 16 diverse and enthusiastic members this year.

Currently the selection of Executive is taking place and they have a couple of fundraisers already planned.

  • They are running a 3 day bake sale, to coincide with Parent-Teacher interviews.  The dates are October 17th and 18th. Donations of baked goods from Rotarians would be appreciated.
  • On Wed Oct 24, they will be fundraising specifically for World Polio Day by doing a "Purple Pinky" promotion.  All Rotarians are invited to stop by and participate.
They are also hard at work on their Hospital room project.  They had raised $1,241 in 2017-18 and then were the recipients of a $2,000 grant from CFSEA.  So, some painting and window stenciling has taken place and they are working on curtains and furniture at this point.  It is room # 50 on the Pediatrics Ward, and they hope to have a nautical theme for the room.
