Meeting Information
President Meeting Remarks:
President Mark Sorenson welcomed everyone to the meeting today. He hoped everyone stayed "tucked in" during this cold weather, although a little weather like this makes us grateful when spring does roll around.

There were 34 Rotarians joining us at the meeting today.

Glen Presley did the update on sale of the tickets for Club 1000, the Festival is still "on", although a virtual Festival will be a first for all of us.  This raffle is our principle fundraising for the Music Festival. (as of  February 8th, we have 574 paid tickets in the draw barrel, and $28,700 in the bank).  Glen Presley, Doug Fleming and Dave Panabaker all have extra tickets, if someone runs short.  As well, if you have a number of sold tickets, please had them in to any of the three Rotarians on the committee and we'll get them counted.

A big thank you to Anne Carrier, Ken Zollner and Dave Stalwick who chased down the purchasers on that list.  A number of additional sales were made and every little bit helps.  Please consider the first week in March the last time to sell tickets, the team would like to gather them up as Festival begins.

Rotary Club "What-z New":
  • A new club laptop is in our future, the current one will not provide the service required to stream our meetings.
  • If our hybrid meetings continue in the future, a few more meeting helpers will be required to help run cameras and sound.  We are all learning as we go along here, but these type of meetings are manpower intensive.
Rotary Club Membership Update:
  • If you are interested in helping this working membership team, please contact Mike Christie.
  • This month's Rotary learning webinar, on Wednesday February 17th at 7:00pm is entitled Rotary Membership Recruitment and Retention.  If you are available, it's a timely topic of interest to all.  Please register in advance at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_m3RVoqlnRruqFST5_D0dWA

  • Dave Panabaker shared some photos of Rotary pool, from the years around the Second World War.  They were given to Brian Rothwell by Audrey Newman when the club was soliciting historical information for our Centennial.  Doug Fleming will get them to the Esplanade Archives with some other things that have appeared over the winter.
  • Terry Brekko reminded everyone who is canvasing for Patron donations and advertising in the Music Festival program that those packages are due right away, like today.  Please provide notes if you haven't heard back from someone, but Delynne needs to begin preparing the program for online use by the end of this week.  Terry thanked everyone who got out and raised funds for the Festival and our endowment.

Brent Secondiak's Classification Talk
It's always wonderful to hear the classification talk of a new Rotarian, as they join our Rotary family.  It's amazing the life experience of some of our members and we very much enjoyed the "Book of Brent" today, as Brent Secondiak told us his story.  He was born in Calgary, spent his primary school in Bassano, his high school years in Brooks and moved to Medicine Hat in 1999.  He has been with the Medicine Hat Police Service for 21 years, starting as a constable and progressing to his current position as an Inspector, in charge of their operations.
He's been married to his wife Debbie for 20 years, she is a local real estate agent and they have two children.  His father was a long service RCMP officer and his mother a nurse, so as he said "Service" runs in his family.  He has been actively involved in the community, helping with the MH Women's Shelter, Ducks Unlimited and several service organizations.  He enjoys watching football, staying in shape and gardening and showed off a few photos of his backyard garden.  He also is a dutiful dog walker, they have two small dogs, who have 3 arrests to their credit.  It appears if you go walking at night, you can find some interesting stuff.

He spoke of some meaningful incidents during his tenure with the police, and Brent spoke of the experience of the 2013 Flood, working in the Emergency Operations Center.  He was asked and answered a number of questions on a variety of topics and we all look forward to his continuing contributions to the community through Rotary.  Welcome to the club!
