President Remarks:

Dear Rotarians and Friends of our Club

Greetings to you at the start of this third week of our new way of living!

It is said that in a crisis situation, we show what we are ‘made of’.

Our Club Membership Committee has been in phone contact with all our members over the past week. We found that none of our members need immediate assistance with provisions or transport. All have a support network of some sort. The important thing is that all know that we are available to step up and assist, where and when necessary.

We elicited very valuable feedback on our current fundraisers, on Bingos and Casinos, as well as ideas for Mike Christie’s annual event thinking.

What also emerged was confirmation that Rotarians are good, kind, caring citizens, who are reaching out to fellow citizens in different ways, to help and support in these different, challenging times. Read for example about Dawn Barr in this edition.

Let us also be mindful of how our working members are making a difference in and through their work contexts – in particular those working in medical / health contexts and those in the financial world. The amount of emotional support they are having to extend in these uncertain times, is huge.

An exciting outcome of our phone calls was that there were offers of assistance with: future Bingo sessions; Mike Christie’s annual event Working Group; and the New Generations Service Exchange Program. Thank you for this!

We know how important communication is and we are attempting to facilitate a free flow of information in a number of ways, including our two Rotary Facebook pages and this weekly newsletter.

While our phone conversations elicited very positive feedback about the Weekly News, Dave Panabaker estimated that of the 115 people who received it last week, approximately 65% viewed it. So my request is this: Please help us make the Weekly News a resource that none of our members and Friends of Rotary will ever want to miss!

We are also keeping things moving through Zoom meetings – at Board level and at committee and working group levels – some of us learning new IT skills in the process!

The good news is that, as you will know, we are holding our first 40-minute Zoom Club meeting on Monday 6 April at noon. New member Igor Grujic will join us and give his classification talk.

On Monday April 20th, 2020 we will hold another meeting, but the speaker is yet to be confirmed.

On Monday April 27th, 2020 we will hold a virtual Monday meeting. PE Mark Sorenson will present to you, the Club Board Officials and Directors for the 2020/21 year that starts on 1 July 2020. This new slate needs your consideration and approval, so we will need a quorum tuned into that meeting.

Service above Self is a call to action.

I’m wondering whether those of you who are computer, IT and social media literate and confident, might consider linking with a Club member who is not as advanced as you are, in order to teach, support and guide a fellow member in a learning process?

The absence of these skills leads to some level of exclusion and isolation – which we do not want, now or ever. Up for this challenge? Once social distancing is a thing of the past, we can spring into action with this initiative, with those members who would like to participate.

In closing, let us keep an eye on Rotary International and Rotary District 5360’s response to COVID-19, via their websites, and consider how we might support initiatives at these broader levels.

Let us also be vigilant as to how, as things unfold here in Medicine Hat, we might find opportunities for our Club to demonstrate, once again, that we are indeed leaders who share ideas and take action.

Margie Booyens

President

Rotary Club - "What we can do"
  • Everyone should have received an email from Heather Bach, with a number of web links to information on Virus protection, self isolation and social distancing.  All great information, and vital to help contain the spread of the CV-19 virus.

How to practice "Social Distancing" - https://www.alberta.ca/prevent-the-spread.aspx#p25621s3
  • On Tuesday March 31st, 2020 the PBS Network is showing "The Polio Crusade" on American Experience...I believe it is on TV in Medicine Hat at 7:00 pm.....definitely a program about a disease that Rotary has been "at war" with for the past 30 years.
  • This is still an ongoing need. Donna at the Salvation Army advised they are not allowing clients to bring their own dishes at this time, because the volunteers then handle them.  So they must be received ahead of time to be sanitized.  She said they are so busy and swamped right now that they don't have much time for shopping.  They would greatly appreciate if we could bring them any containers (with lids) directly.  They have purchased some from Brewmaster but they could certainly use more, so if you have some around the house, they'd really appreciate any we could spare.  They are also in desperate need of sanitizer for volunteers and clients.
Rotary Club "What-z New":
  • Just a reminder that "when" meetings start up again, they will take place in the Courtyard Room, Medicine Hat College.
Rotary Club Membership Update:
  • The membership committee will be dividing up the club roster, and trying to be in contact with every Rotarian just to help with the "Rotary withdrawal" we are probably all feeling.
Rotary Club Information:
  • Housekeeping:
    • Please collect club draw items.  It is an important part of our meeting and the funds generated help to run the club.

Stories
Sewing Face Masks
A shout out to Rotarian Dawn Barr, who has been spending her self isolation time sewing washable face masks for use in a variety of situations.  Now sewing for Dawn is not a surprise to anyone who knows her but what a great way to help out and contribute while you are staying home.  Dawn is able to sew about 20 masks each day.  Dawn mentioned "How poignant that my mom was sent to Scotland during the war to sew uniforms and here I am sewing masks ..... history does repeat .... feeling her spirit".
If you have sewing skills, and some time I know that Dawn would be happy to share the pattern with you.

Minute People:
  • Kitt and Dieter passed on a nice note from Stephnie Rodrigo, one of our visiting Rotarians from Sri Lanka in 2018.
    • My dearest friends, There is no better time to think of you and wish you God's Blessings to be protected.  We have wonderful memories of the times spent in your land and mine and theses moments are treasured very much.  I have not left my home since March 16, 2020 but I feel safe and I am keeping fine.  We all want this to come to an end.  Due to the curfew we lost only one person to date for which we are very thankful.  Awaiting the day when we can go back to work and start a fresh. Lots of love, Stephnie.
  • Kitt and Dieter had also made a suggestion to put aside the weekly meeting costs that we aren't spending currently, and once we are back together that money could form either a significant donation to Rotary International or the beginning of the funding for a local project if one was to come up.  Great idea.
  • Just a plug for the Rotary History document, if you've read it you'll know that this club is not a stranger to the loss of individuals during a pandemic.  The original President of the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat, William McNeely, a local flour mill owner, unfortunately died in office in October, 1918, a victim of the Spanish Flu.  Stay safe everyone!
