President's Information
President's Remarks:

President Margie started this business meeting with a review of the activities and events that had been held in the last month.  It was truly a busy month for Rotary.  It began with birthday cake cutting on July 1st for Canada Day, the New Zealand friendship exchange, the Salvation Army hot meal program, our NGSE student Katarina, the meeting in the park with the District Governor, meetings of the Music Festival Society, the work around the Rotary float, the Cowtan's BBQ and the Medicine Hat Mavericks baseball game.  Wow, hope everyone took part and enjoyed themselves.

President Margie led the club through a number of conversations regarding our goals for 2019-2020 and several meeting structure issues.  The goals were discussed and will be consolidated by Margie for approval of the Board next month and then will be published at the next business meeting.

The structure of the meeting has been a topic of discussion among Rotarians these last few months, and by show of hands the following changes will be implemented for the balance of the 2019-2020 year.  A review of these will be held as part of our year end wrap-up.
  • We will continue to sing O'Canada at the beginning of each meeting.
  • A non-denominational invocation or reciting of the 4 Way Test or the Rotary Mission will be done BEFORE the meeting.
  • "God Save the Queen" will no longer be sung, although her portrait can be placed up on the wall.
  • The discussion on chairing of the meetings did not get finished and will be resumed at the next business meeting.
President Margie will send out an "all member" email over the next week or so, to confirm these changes and present any additional issues that need to be brought before the membership.

It was a great, constructive discussion, held in the best Rotary way and will help us go forward on the club modernization.

Rotary Presentations:

Karen Blewett, on behalf of the Rotary Board and the club presented Past President Chris Perret with a memento in recognition of his leadership and service during the last Rotary year.  This was a little late, due to the late arrival of the memento.  Many thanks to Chris for this dedication during the Rotary year.

Next, President Margie Booyens presented Marg Mazerolle with a  "Women in Rotary" pin, sent by our District Governor.  DG Christine learned that Marg was one of our first female members and the first female President of the club in 1999 - 2000.

Stories
Honorary Club Membership - Herman Wahl
In a special presentation today, Past President Chris Perret announced that Herman Wahl was being made an Honorary Member of the club.

Herman joined the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat in 1962, and took the Rotary charge to heart, participating in club projects and activities for 57 years.  He demonstrated the qualities of head and heart that epitomize being a Rotarian and has been an inspiration to many in the club.  Herman was introduced to the club by Bill Sellhorn ( Anne Carrier's father) and was given the classification "flower farmer" to fit with his greenhouse industry business.

In 2019, Herman's health has been a challenge and he needed to reconsider active membership and took a leave of absence.  The Membership Committee and the Rotary Board did not want to end over 57 years of dedicated service and fellowship and therefore converted his membership to honorary.  What that hopefully means is all the fun and less of the work.  We also hope to see Herman and Fran at future Rotary events and we all thank Herman for his many years of service to Rotary and the Community.
