Meeting Information
NB:  Editors note:  I'm very sorry for the very late delivery of this week's Bulletin.  We had trouble with the club's link to Clubrunner and didn't have access for a few days.  But things seem to be back to normal and hopefully next week's edition will be "on time".

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:
President Bruce Shepard was at the podium this morning, welcoming everyone to this "in-person" meeting.
President Bruce reminded everyone that our next "in-person" meeting at the Lodge is Monday December 18th.  Bring a gift valued at no more than $20.00 for the blind gift exchange.  That is always a lot of fun.

As President he issued a challenge to members: a competition during this last meeting of the year: ugliest Christmas tie, sweater or hat!

Rotary Club "What-z New":
  • A few more meeting helpers are required to run cameras and sound during our hybrid meetings. Anyone wishing to help should contact Mike Christie 403 878 3311.

Stories
Cycling without Age
The Rotary Club was very happy to welcome Chris Christie and Julie Lacasse to our meeting today.  Both these ladies spoke about their work with Cycling without Age, a continent wide organization which provides the cycling experience to those who through age, or disability have lost that experience.

The organization uses a Trishaw, which provides transportation for two individuals and is powered by a "pilot" and an attached electric bicycle.  Their first full summer of operation, they provided 70 rides and have doubled their fleet of trishaws, to hopefully provide a significant increase in their capacity for 2024.  They expressed a desire for more individuals to train as pilots, as that seemed to be a limiting factor in the number of rides last year.  They received a $25,000 grant from the Community Foundation to get the organization off the ground and support from both Pembina Pipeline and International Petroleum Corporation for training and equipment.  They are responsible for insurance, pilot training and qualifications, helmets/racks and storage.
Their first year of operation centered on the Cypress View Foundation, who provided space to store the trishaws and offered their residents the opportunity to use the service.

It was apparently great for mood, mental health and an outstanding outing, especially when the trip included a stop at the ice cream shop.  The group has also provided some youth and vulnerable sector individuals with the opportunity to participate and that has gone very well.  They are currently looking for donations to allow operation of the service for the next year.  More information is available at their website https://www.cwamedhat.ca .

Julie answered questions, including how Team Freewheel might potentially help with maintenance or volunteer service.  She was presented with a Rotary Mug and thanked for her work and presentation by President Bruce Shepard.

Minutes: new minutes and a few reminders

Salvation Army Christmas Kettle collection: Many more volunteers needed! If you are able, please call Shirley, Kettle Coordinator, on 587-253-0740 to offer your services in a time slot and at a venue of your choice, Monday 18 December – Saturday 23 December. Shirley would be most grateful for any help you can give – even if it is just one hour! Our Club did our stint on Saturday 2 December at Walmart.

Bingo: Next bingo is on Monday 18 December, a full team has been recruited.  Thanks to everyone who supports the club with their participation in our bingos.

CLUB 1000 RAFFLE TICKETS: Dave Panabaker reminded all to please get their book(s) of raffle tickets sold, preferably before Christmas.
Members are reminded that our Club 1000 raffle is the principal activity to raise funds for the Rotary Music Festival.

Monarch 1911 Society: Mike Christie, who serves on the Board of this new society, informed that Rotarians available on Thursday 21 December, are invited to go to the Monarch, 7pm to view a movie – HOME ALONE will be shown - the very first post-Monarch-renovation screening - free of charge – so as to see, first hand, how the Monarch has been transformed back to its former glory. Gail Halderman pointed out the significance of the date: it will be the 112th birthday of the Monarch on 21 December 2023. An email invitation was sent out by Mike early this week.

Luke Fandrich's documentary on the history of the Monarch Theatre will be shown on December 28, 29, 30.  Tickets for that screening are going fast and must be purchased through Eventbrite.  The link to follow is https://www.eventcreate.com/e/monarch?fbclid=IwAR3-7YJaYbeualZ_UpK5uNJJGXYJXNRQ-I7x0epRRrGOgF1tZVP8PDrNvFs

TEAM FREEWHEEL - Terry Cooper advised that Thursday morning was the last Team Freewheel work session of this year.  They have done amazing work on the last group of bikes, and have approximately 70 ready to be distributed in the community in the spring.  Unfortunately the late WN didn't send this message out early enough to remind guests to attend, but a few photos were taken to show the work going on.

TECH SUPPORT AND COVERAGE FOR SGT-AT-ARMS:  Mike Christie, the club's President-elect, is looking for additional folks to support our technical setup for in-person meetings.  The more people who know how to set up the equipment, the better off the club is.  Mike also needs someone to take over the leadership of the SGT-at-Arms role for each meeting.
