Meeting Information
President Meeting Remarks:

President Terry Partis welcomed everyone to the second meeting of December and the second last meeting of this calendar year.  He expressed amazement at how fast this year has flown by, he is halfway through his year as President.

Terry reviewed all the activities that are going on this week.  The Christmas Cheer and Light Tour and a Rotary Bingo are happening on Wednesday evening, the Rotary Board meets on Thursday evening and the Club's annual ringing of the Salvation Army Christmas Kettles happens on Saturday and Monday.

Rotary Club "What-z New":
  • As it is most likely our hybrid meetings will continue in the future, a few more meeting helpers will be required to help run cameras and sound.  We are all learning to adapt to this new reality.  Any wishing to help should contact Mike Christie 403 878 3311.
Rotary Club Membership Update:
  • At the beginning of our meeting featuring the new Mayor of Medicine Hat, Linnsie Clark, she was inducted as an honorary member of the club.  It has been the club's pleasure to extend that honor to all past serving mayors of Medicine Hat.  It helps us stay connected to the local council and community.  Serving political figures cannot be active Rotarians, but being an honorary member keeps us in touch.
Mayor Linnsie was inducted by Past President Mark Sorenson, who commented that a virtual induction isn't quite the same as meeting in person.  He has a certificate and membership pin that we will have delivered soon and everyone welcomed Linnsie into the club.
  • There is always room for more interested Rotarians to join the membership team, check out a meeting and see how exciting it is.

Meeting with the new Mayor
The Rotary Club was delighted to welcome Medicine Hat's new Mayor, Linnsie Clark, to our meeting today.  She spoke about her first 50 days in office and her experience so far in the role.

Mayor Linnsie was welcomed by President Terry Partis and introduced by Membership Director Mike Christie.

Linnsie was born in Oyen, and grew up on a ranch south of Medicine Hat.  She attended the University of Lethbridge for her undergraduate degree and obtained her law degree at the University of Victoria.  She worked for 10 years in Vancouver with the hospital union, and returned to Medicine Hat as a solicitor for the City in 2017.  She expressed her passion for the community and for a healthy, vibrant population.

She spoke about the difficult times that the community has endured during the COVID period, particularly the economy and the mental health of both the community at large and individuals.

She appreciates the Rotary principles, and our motto of "Service above Self" and she hopes to make a difference during her time as Mayor.  She mentioned the challenges that face members of the community, housing, mental health and substance abuse.  She spoke about the budgeting challenges and upcoming Strategic Planning that this Council will do together.  She sees exceptional talents in the Council, and is hoping to lead them towards a bright future.

Many questions were asked and answered and President Terry expressed his appreciation for the Mayor's attendance and her willingness to speak to us.

  • Dave also mentioned that he has revised the dates for his course on learning how to build this newsletter.  It will be done over a number of Monday nights in January. Watch for the sign-up email after the New Year.
  • Dave also mentioned that our club organization software, Clubrunner was having a series of courses on all phases of running the software. It's great for both the new and the experience Rotarian.  Sign-up is available at https://site.clubrunner.ca/page/webinars
  • Gregg Martin is looking for at least four volunteers to work a bingo on Wednesday Dec 15. The sign-up email has gone out and it might be a great opportunity to invite a friend or neighbor to help out.

  • Terry Cooper, Director of International Service provided a brief update on the "Make em Smile" project in Sri Lanka.  Because of some issues with getting receipts, our club may need to pick up some small extra expenses as part of our recent project.  Those extra expenses will not exceed $500, and Terry is working with the host club to reduce that number.
  • Terry Brekko advised that a recent email from Rotary International told a pretty good story about our work to eliminate polio in the world.  Check it out at https://www.endpolio.org
