President's Information
President's Remarks:
This week, Director of Ways and Means Glen Presley, took the podium and the microphone.  Although President Chris was in attendance, it was another opportunity for a Director to get the experience of running the meeting.  Acting President Glen did a moment of silence for the victims of the recent air tragedy in Ethiopia, more poignant for all of us as President Chris and Rotarian Dick Northcott had just returned from that country.

Glen welcomed everyone on this particular Monday, which is the middle of the annual Music Festival.  Many Rotarians who were not in attendance were busy at the Festival.

Glen reminded everyone that March was Rotary "Water & Sanitation" month, a focus of Rotary in helping eliminate disease in area's without proper delivery of either.

Club Strategic Planning:
Just as a reminder, a short Strategic Planning Questionnaire has been emailed out to members, asking for feedback on strategic priorities and fundraising.  The results of this survey will be part of the strategic planning session in the New Year. The date for that session is April 6, the first Saturday in April.

Please complete the Strategic Planning Questionnaire and either bring it to the next meeting or email it back to Chris.  This is an opportunity for all members to express their opinion and to have their voices heard.

Make Ups:
  • President Chris Perret and Dick Northcott had three makeups in Ethiopia and Malawi.  Both Chris and Dick spoke in glowing terms of the advances Rotary has made in Ethiopia in the past few years, particularly the number and vibrancy of the Rotaract Clubs.  For example in Ethiopia there are 14 Rotary Clubs and 18 Rotaract Clubs, and the Rotaract groups are growing quickly.  Hopefully there will be an opportunity to share a possible project with one of these groups in the future.
Family of Rotary:
  • The club wishes Lyndell Brekko the best, as she recovers from her recent surgery.
  • The club was updated on the condition of Herman Wahl, who is currently in Medicine Hat hospital awaiting transfer to Calgary to deal with a recent heart problem.

  • Dave also mentioned that nominations for the 2019 Community Spirit Awards are now open, several of the Rotarians in our club (most recently Stan Sakamoto in 2017) have been honored for their community spirit.  If anyone knows someone who should be nominated, or would like to help with the nomination group, please contact President-elect Margie Booyens or Dave Panabaker.  For more information, consult the City of Medicine Hat website and search for "2019 Community Spirit Awards".
