MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

President Mike Christie began the meeting by comparing the temperature outside to the temperature in the room, it seems to be warm everywhere.  He thanked everyone for the great attendance at today's meeting and attributed that to our wonderful Rotarian speakers and perhaps to many folks turning in sold Club 1000 tickets.

It was our privilege to hear two of our newest Rotarians speak about their lives and families.  First, we heard from Brenda Mercer, who was a 60's Scoop "Thriver", and although she went through several foster homes, eventually ended up in a loving family in Shaunaven, Saskatchewan.  She was married at 17 and is now a great grandmother, a role she really enjoys.
She spoke about a few of her experiences with the City of Regina social department, and described several of the awards she has received over the years, including a King Charles medal last year.

Brenda is a member of the Dakota Sioux tribe and is reclaiming her birth name "White Horse Rider" later this year.  Brenda will be a wonderful source of information and perspective for the club.

Brenda was then presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship by President Mike, which was sponsored by Sandy Mackay as a member of our club and in recognition of all her great work over the years.  A hug was in order.

Next, Lionel Brideson took the podium and spoke about his 43 years in the education field, as both a teacher and a principal.  Lionel grew up in Calgary and mentioned that one of his attractions to Rotary was the work we have done to eradicate polio, one of his older sisters had polio as a young teen, and it affected her for the rest of her life.

He talked about the difference one teacher can make, as an instructor at Riverside in Calgary made a major difference in his life.  He secured a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Calgary and worked around the prairies and into the territories during his career.  He was made an honorary member of the Dene nation for his work on their reserve.

He was the principal of Elm Street School for 6 years and worked with the community to improve the equipment and lunch programs with corporate partners.

He credits his parents, who were employed in the faith community for his interest in community service and helping his fellow man.

MONARCH 1911 SOCIETY

As many Rotarians will know, our club in cooperation with the Saamis Rotary Club and the Friends of the Monarch Society have been working on restoring both the structure and the programming at the historic Monarch movie theatre on 2nd St SE.

Our club will try to keep track of events on a the Monarch, to give members a heads-up that the opportunity to serve exists.  If you are interested, please let Rotarian Janessa Anderson (403-952-1907) know and she can provide details of available shifts and responsibilities.
Volunteering at a show is a great way to connect with the community and support the historic local landmark.

    Minute Reminders:

    WHY ROTARY RECRUITING EVENT
Past President Bruce Shepard reminded members that the 2nd "Why Rotary" event will be taking place on Wednesday April 30th, at the Stampede Ballroom.  Tickets are $50.00 ea, and will be available soon.  This year there is a full buffet supper, and tickets will be allocated to each club based on membership.  The doors open at 5:00 pm with supper scheduled for 6:00 pm.

    ROTARY CONVENTION INCENTIVE
Club Treasurer Gail Halderman reminded members that due to the proximity of the convention to our club, our 2024-2025 budget includes a sum of money to be shared between those members who are attending the event.  By a show of hands it appeared that 7 or 8 members of those present are going, so please sign up and share in this thoughtful idea.

Kitt Brand advised that their "small" table in the House of Friendship, to show support for Peace in the Ukraine has "exploded" into a great many projects going on in that area.  Watch for them, if you are going to convention in Calgary.

    BINGO UPDATES
Dave Panabaker reported that the bingo team on March 3rd, served 53 players and earned a profit of $205.75.  Doug Fleming was the winner of the guess pot.

The next bingo is Friday evening, March 28th.  A signup email will be out this week.

    70TH ANNIVERSARY ROTARY MUSIC FESTIVAL
Please take advantage of the two great public performances at the Music Festival this weekend.  The Rotary Rosebowl will be Friday March 14th, at the MH College Theatre starting at 7:00 pm.  The Stars of the Festival will take place on Sunday March 16th, at St Barnabas Anglican Church beginning at 7:00 pm.  See the best performers that our support of the Music Festival produces.

THE MONARCH THEATRE - OPERATING CAPITAL DEBENTURES
Dave Panabaker advised that he had received a request from the "Monarch 1911 Society" to introduce the concept of their operating debentures.  During this startup period of time, while expenditures exceed revenue, the.y are setting up a series of Operating Debentures and are looking for Rotarians to invest.  The debentures cost $5,000 and are flexible in the repayment methods.  The debentures pay a 5% interest rate and if you are interested in supporting the Monarch Theatre project, Dave can send you the document or you can contact Frank Devine at the Saamis Club for more info.

    ROTARY DINNER CLUB
Milan Vujovic advises everyone who has signed up for this year's dinner club that dinners can now be booked.  If you have a particular date in mind, it's best to get it to him (or his spouse Almira) so that date can be fit into the schedule.  Please phone and book your dinner as soon as you can.

    Family of Rotary
    • Bernie Scott was very happy to get out of the hospital in Calgary over the weekend and to get back home to Medicine Hat on Wednesday.  He wanted to thank everyone who has sent along best wishes and we hopefully will see him out to a meeting soon.
