MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

President Mike Christie welcomed all to the Club's April Business Meeting, commenting on how amazingly quickly the weather can change in this neck of the woods, and expressing appreciation for the early spring sunshine and warmth.

There were no guests to welcome, this being a business meeting, so it was straight into the business of the day.

President Mike thanked Club Service Director, Dave Stalwick, and John John, for getting the ground level meeting room set up for the meeting - and expressed the hope that we would be able to move to the bigger downstairs meeting room soon.

Rotarian Ken Zollner caused some amusement by calling in on President Mike's cell phone, as Mike was speaking, to ask about the Zoom connection which had sadly not been set up this time around. Ken subsequently joined us in person!

Referring to the previous noon meeting, during which District 5360 Co-ordinator of RYPEN, Kerstan Price, had been the guest speaker, President Mike raised the matter of the club's promised donation to RYPEN 2025 - a donation of 2 x $600, with RYPEN staff recruiting and selecting appropriate participants for the camp. Margie Booyens will contact Club Treasurer, Gail Halderman, and Director of Youth and Vocational Services, Peter Mueller, to confirm that the donation has been or will be made soon.

Referring to an email he had circulated to members the previous week, President Mike asked the meeting whether there was support for donating a Shelter Box to the earthquake-hit country of Myanmar. Members approved, so the matter was referred to Terry Cooper and the Club's Project & Program Committee for follow-up.

Friends of the Monarch: President Mike intimated that the Friends are seeking funds to (a) extend the stage of the Monarch Theatre for larger productions ($125,000 is needed), and (b) to fix the front facade and marquee (a donation of any amount will be welcome and will be matched). Board member Anne Carrier commented on how the Monarch Theatre would be able to accommodate selected Rotary Music Festival performances, once the stage had been enlarged.

Next on President Mike's agenda was the Medicine Hat Litter Blitz. After a brief discussion, the following was decided: Members will be asked to gather on Rotary Centennial Drive at 09:00 on Saturday 26 April wearing Rotary t-shirts and gloves. After the completion of the clean-up, those available will gather for a social time at the Medicine Hat Brewing Company, located on that stretch of road. Exact logistics will be worked out and made known to members in due course.

Director of Club Service, Dave Stalwick, shared the good news that as from Monday 14 April, Rotary noon meetings would indeed be held in CORE's larger meeting room downstairs. With a smile on his face, Dave cautioned members that while there would be no sergeant-at-arms fines that day, he was keeping a list which would be activated at a future meeting!

Dave Stalwick also mentioned the club GREETER schedule that was being circulated at the meeting. He encouraged newer members to get to know fellow members better by taking on the greeter role at a future meeting. He said that the plan was in fact to have two greeters, one a newer member and the other a member of longer standing, the latter to support and assist the newer member.

Board member-at-large, Anne Carrier, reported on the 2024-2025 Club 1000 raffle ticket sales. Anne estimated that about 60% of the tickets had been sold but said a report on the exact income and expenditures would be forthcoming.

Past President Bruce Shepard reminded members that the 2025 Why Rotary event was coming up on Wednesday 30 April in the Ballroom at the Stampede Grounds. He emphasized that this was a great opportunity to introduce prospective members to Rotary. With the other Rotary Clubs in town participating, our club has 50 tickets for the event ($50 each), of which 20 have been sold to date. All clubs will have exhibitions of their services and projects.

MONARCH 1911 SOCIETY

As many Rotarians will know, our club, in cooperation with the Saamis Rotary Club and the Friends of the Monarch Society, has been working on restoring both the structure and the programming at the historic Monarch movie theatre on 2nd St SE.

Our club will try to keep track of events on at the Monarch, to give members a heads-up that the opportunity to serve exists.  If you are interested, please let Rotarian Janessa Anderson (403-952-1907) know and she can provide details of available shifts and responsibilities.

Volunteering at a show is a great way to connect with the community and support the historic local landmark.

Minute Reminders

NEW CLUB FLAG
President Mike pointed out how the flag John John puts up for every meeting, is looking a tad tatty!

The meeting agreed that Club Service Director, Dave Stalwick, could happily buy a new one! - possibly two, placing one at the Monarch Theatre.

(Some of the minutes below were discussed during the Business Meeting. We offer them again in a summary of reminders)

WHY ROTARY RECRUITING EVENT
PP Bruce Shepard reminded everyone that the 2nd "Why Rotary" event will be taking place on Wednesday April 30th, in the Stampede Ballroom.  Tickets are $50.00 each, and he is taking orders for them now.  This year there is a full buffet supper, and tickets will be allocated to each Rotary club in Medicine Hat, based on membership numbers.  The doors open at 5:00 pm with supper scheduled for 6:00 pm.

ROTARY CONVENTION INCENTIVE
Due to the proximity of the RI convention to our club, our 2024-2025 club budget includes a sum of money to be shared between those members who are attending the event.  Please sign up and share in this thoughtful idea.

BINGO UPDATES
Please consider helping out at one of the future bingo events. The next one is Wednesday evening, April 16th beginning at 5:00 pm. Floor workers are needed.

PRESIDENT ELECT FOR 2025-2026 ROTARY YEAR
PP Bruce Shepard reminded Past Presidents that he would be holding another meeting of the Past Presidents group straight after the noon meeting. The group will meet to discuss options and who else might be qualified to step into the role of President-elect nominee in July 2025.

70TH ANNIVERSARY ROTARY MUSIC FESTIVAL ROSEBOWL WINNER CONCERT
We are delighted that the winner of the 2025 Rosebowl, pianist Miriam Monet, has, on our request, agreed to put on a concert for Rotarians and friends, during the week of 12 May in St Barnabas Church. This will be a practice run for the Provincials, as she will play the two pieces she has entered for this 'next level' competition. Watch this space for the day and time, still to be finalized.

THE MONARCH THEATRE - OPERATING CAPITAL DEBENTURES
Members are reminded about the Monarch 1911 Society's operating debentures.  During this start-up period, while expenditures exceed revenue, they are setting up a series of Operating Debentures and are looking for Rotarians to invest.  The debentures cost $5,000 and are flexible in the repayment methods.  The debentures pay a 5% interest rate and if you are interested in supporting the Monarch Theatre project, Dave Panabaker can send you the document or you can contact Frank Devine at the Saamis Rotary Club for more information.

ROTARY DINNER CLUB
Members are reminded that everyone who has signed up for this year's dinner club can now book a date for the dinner in their home.  If you have a particular date in mind, it's best to get it to Milan (or his spouse Almira) so that date can be fitted into the schedule. Please phone and book your dinner as soon as you can. Dick Bide said how much he, his wife Linda, Peter Mueller and Gwen Dirk had enjoyed a dinner at 77 Northlands Way NE this past Saturday!

Family of Rotary
  • The Rotary Club mourns the passing of our long time member, and honorary Sgt-at-Arms, Adolf Seiler, who passed away in Nanaimo on Friday March 28th. The service will be held at Patterson Funeral Home on Monday 14 April at 2pm.
  • Friend of the club Don Reid has completed his transition to a new home at Chinook Village and would welcome phone calls and visits.
  • Rotarian Marg Mazerolle is having some mobility challenges, so a visit or the offer of a ride would be appreciated.
  • Please keep a Board Member informed about members health and/or any other changes, so that information can be provided to the club through the Weekly News.
