Meeting Information
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:
It was a busy, working meeting of the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat, led off by President Bruce Shepard suitably attired for Halloween.  He did complain about forgetting his notes and the prizes he promised, but the meeting proceeded well anyway.
Several informational minutes were held, to update the club on the kickoff of the 2024 raffle in support of the Music Festival and an update by Don Davis on the upcoming Music Festival in March of 2024.

Don spoke about the joy of having a “normal” festival, after a few years of virtual and reduced programming due to COVID.  There have been a few changes in venues due to changes at the MH College.  As well, a number of new teachers in town and younger students will change the size of classes.

Don mentioned that Festival ED Delynne Lorentzen has recruited some wonderful adjudicators and we can look forward to a high quality festival.

The meeting ended with a costume judging, won by soon to be vacationing treasurer Gail Halderman.  Some great get-ups.

Community Service Announcements
The Community Service Committee led a portion of our meeting today, and Director Terry Cooper announced several project awards.

Firstly, the Committee had been approached by the YMCA to replace a number of the life jackets that they provide to boaters on the South Saskatchewan river.  Some of the life jackets that we provided in 2018 have been worn out, and are in need of replacement.  The CS committee met with the YMCA staff and agreed to donate a total of $690.00 to replace the safety items.  A "thank you" plaque is prominent above the life jacket storage area, indicating our support of this safety program.
Director Terry Cooper provided a "Notice of Motion" that based on a review of the location by several committee members, and approval of the Board that $2,000 be donated to the Redcliff Youth Centre, for a new standup freezer and dishwasher to complete the replacement of their kitchen setup.  It was noted that a gently used stove and refrigerator had already been donated by Alain Guerard when they replaced their kitchen appliances.  The kitchen is used to provide a hot lunch program for approximately 90 youth each month, and teach youth how to cook, at twice a week sessions.
Alain spent a little time speaking about the Redcliff Action Society for Youth and their organization on Main Street S in Redcliff.  They have a staff of 5 full and part time social workers and deal with many different youth in the area.  The Executive Director, Janae Ulrich gave a tour of the facility to Alain and Margie, and they were both very impressed with the operation.  It is hoped we might take a tour of the operation sometime in the future.

Dave Panabaker made a motion to waive our traditional 2 week waiting period for financial commitments, which was seconded by Mike Christie and passed unanimously by those in attendance.

The motion to approve the donation was made by Alain Guerard and seconded by Margie Booyens, and passed by the club.

The meeting finished with a service project, where 35 Men's Hygiene Bags were packed, in support of clients of Saamis Immigration and "International Men's Day".  The bags will be presented to the participants on November 16th.

Minutes: new information and a few reminders

LAST BINGO: Dave Stalwick thanked everyone who worked the Sunday afternoon bingo.  The club earned $2100 toward the bingo pool, and served 111 players.  It was a busy, but fun afternoon.  Dave Stalwick and Terry Cooper split the guess pot and special thanks went to Anne Carrier who came as a fill in at the last minute, very much appreciated.  Dave also mentioned that he received pool payout checks for September for $1,800/event.  The next bingo is Friday evening, November 17th.

CHRISTMAS KETTLES: Anne Carrier reviewed her schedule for the Salvation Army on Saturday 2 December, at the two entrances to Walmart. After a little recruiting all the time slots are filled.

DISTRICT WEBINAR: Margie Booyens advised that a "get to know your DGN" webinar will be held by the District, on Tuesday November 28, at 7pm.  DGN Randy Smith will be introduced.

CLUB 1000 TICKETS: Dave Panabaker reminded everyone that our Club 1000 raffle is the principle fundraising for the Rotary Music Festival, and encouraged everyone to get out and sell their tickets.

TECH SUPPORT AND COVERAGE FOR SGT-AT-ARMS:  Mike Christie, as the club's President-elect renewed the call for additional folks to support our technical setup for in-person meetings.  The more people who know how to set up the equipment the better off the club is, and trust me it isn't that tough.  He also mentioned that as incoming President he will need someone to take over the leadership of the Sgt-at-Arms program for each meeting.  The Presidents duty is to "pay fines", not hand them out.....

Family of Rotary.
  • Former Rotarian Ray Kemp is still on 4 West in the MH Hospital, and will hopefully be moved to a longer term ward in the next week for rehabilitation.
  • Glen Presley was to leave the hospital on Saturday and should now be home recovering from his fall.  Hopefully he'll feel himself pretty soon.
  • Please keep a Board Member informed about members health changes, so that information can be provided to the club through the Weekly News.
